Cutting/ application table.
Posted by justin on August 24, 2004 at 5:13 pmThis site is so helpful. All you guys have such useful information and are so helpful.
I was wondering what the best thing to use for the surface on my apllication/ cutting table. I have been using a sheet of melamine mounted on chipboard till now. I am finding that there are grooves forming in the melamine which seem to pull my knife blade into them.

A large cutting mat, don’t have the info of the company to hand as its at work, probably no use as you’re not UK, the one i’m ordering is 8 foot x 4 foot, (to completely cover an 8×4 table) comes with a metre long safety rule, and a great selection of knives and cutters for £170, similar to this

You can save a whole load of cash by giving Rising a ring! I bought an 8×4 cutting mat from him for around the £100 mark and its spot on! I think he sells a range of other gadgets as well, so no doubt he could sort you out with safety rules and all the rest 😀 I bought my safety rule from Cherwells, its one of those things you have to have if you value your fingers! 😮

Right now I am using a retired butchers table. It is from a deli and is constructed plenty sturdy for anything I am using it for. It has some type of white plastic (cutting board) material on it about .5 inch thick. It takes deep cuts from the knife quite well.
My nieghbor gave it to me…so I don’t know how much help that would be to you. I don’t know where you would even find something like this. 😉

Hi friends,
I use a glass top on my 3600mm x 1200mm table.
Lasts for years. My present top is 6 years old and has heaps of life left yet.
Get the edges polished, use saftey glass and you’ll have no problems.
One of my tables I cut a hole under the glass and put a fluro light for layered work. Works a treat.
Only thing to remember is that you need to keep using a good blade, as a blunt one will scratch the glass.
Cheers

good idea that actualy mate…
toughend or laminate glass 6mm with polished edges would be good.
the down side for us is in the main workshop we hammer, bang etc on the tables as well as laying up signs. 😕
we have just put 3 metal topped tables in our vinyl/print room. 3 steel tops 10 foot x 5 foot with no joins. works great for trimming up and easy to wipe down. we got 3mm thick so it should never ever need replacing. -
Yeah Rob, had an employee that sat a timber sign on the table top and proceeded to hammer in some nails. I think the third hit with the hammer shattered the glass in a million pieces. It was at that same point I realised that the glass guy had charged me for safety glass, but delivered normal glass.
It was just after that I discovered the glass guy had gone broke.
Was not a good week 🙁
