I would give him 1 hour max that is built into the original price. If he insists on messing you about all you have to do is insist that he pays for your time, I’m sure he will make his mind up very quickly.

Brian, put something up in the design forum. Pretty sure with all the excellent design talent on the forum something should keep the guy happy. :lol1:

Exactly as Mike has said. Some people will never be satisfied – particularly when they think your design time is free. Agree an hourly rate for any further designs and he’ll quickly focus his ideas on what he wants

For the first time we just charged for this.

Normally its all part of the price but we ended up doing 4 more layouts after the initial design which is as we always say this is what we recommend.

Of course the customer wants to see very option that is part of the process you have gone through to get to what you have shown them. We explained we have tried every conceivable option and this is what works.

But no they want to see what it looks like this way and that. They usually go back to what you originally suggest on this occasion we did around 4 options and charged them an extra £130

1-2 hours is what we build into the price and we usually stick to this or make it clear that the potential is there for further charging.

I give ’em 20mins for ‘free’…do most with them there if possible, saves me going up blind alleys with stuff they don’t like.

May spend a further 20 tweaking my alignments etc. before committing to cut/print.

If I know / feel it’s going to be a lengthy process I pre-agree an hourly rate on a take it or leave it basis.

There is quite an easy solution to this problem. . .

step 1 : When quoting for any work clearly state price for job subject to ARTWORK READY IN DIGITAL FORMAT !

Step 2: Clearly state the charges for digitizing physical artwork like vectoring logos from headed paper / business cards ! ( usaully a flat fee )

Step 3: Clearly state your hourly rate for conceptual design should they come to you with nothing !

Of course all of the above are optional depending on how much you want the job. Its good to remember a bit of time invested in visuals can give you the edge over the competition and win you that lucrative contract.
However, I believe customers should be able to make the decision of who produces their signs by simply viewing previous works and portfolios.
