Does any one do curtain side vehicle lettering?

I have recently been asked to quote for a number of curtain side vehicles from different sources (funny how you can go for a long time without ever being asked to do a certain type of job, when suddenly you are asked to do two or three together?). I’ve always thought these had to be done with ink (because when I’ve suggested using a banner vinyl to a vehicle operator in the past I’ve been told this is unsuitable. Is banner vinyl sufficient for one of these?

How easy is it to apply a vinyl (assuming vinyl is suitable) to a curtain side? Can it be done in situ (I imagine it to be difficult) – or does the curtain have to come off for any vinyl to be effectively applied.

I’ve normally declined to quote for these in the past as these are outwith my area of experience – but I now wonder if I am allowing pre-conceived ideas to close my mind to opportunities.

    Hi Phil
I would reckon you could do this, but it is tricky.
First thing! You need truck vinyl. Not banner vinyl.
There are limited suppliers of the stuff & most suppliers will try and sell you banner saying it will work when it won’t. “Trust me”
APA. Do it. I don’t have their number handy but if you need it ill stick it on here tomorrow. I’m told Avery does it but heard it’s an arm and a leg….

Its hard to apply simply because its about 5 times more sticky than vinyl.
I do mean sticky. The vinyl is also very soft and stretches very easy. Be sure to cover it all with backing tape leaving no vinyl exposed as it seems to curl back and stick to it’s self. The next problem is! You have to do it dry. Its so sticky it wont let the water escape. And in my opinion even if you use soap or rapid tack your not getting the proper adhesion.

I was chatting to Adrian: signrite in the chat room a few weeks ago and he said he has someone inside the truck holding an 8’x4’ board behind the curtain. This giving a rigid surface to push against. I tried it and it did work very well. My problem came when the panel I was applying was higher than the sheet. Its not impossible but one guy holding the 8’x4’ of wood up till you apply a graphic can be hard on the old arms. 😆

Anyway Phil, not trying to scare you out of it because its not just as bad as I may make it to be. It just needs to be approached different from the normal vinyl method.
What I would do is buy a couple of metres of the stuff and try it on an old banner.
This will give you a feel for it.

Be sure to give a good mark-up on your price for doing it.

no gray. what will happen mate is an invoice will drop from under your monitor. asking for payment of webspace you have clogged up with posts on UKSG 😆 😆 😆
there is still ranks to be made. 500 i think is the next one..
i will however be giving a prize for the most posts. i decided this when we brought the post ranking in but was unsure how it would work.

i think the one with 1000 posts will be presented with an A4 solid brass engraved plaque. complete with there company logo etc on it. mounted on a hardwood for there works office/reception.

    what do you think?
