  • Cricket score board??

Posted by John Ashbee on June 15, 2004 at 8:03 pm

    Hi,
I’ve been asked to produce a cricket score board for a local club.
Its got to be approx 6′ x 4′ with a few lines of text and some hook on numbers.
I was thinking of doing the main board in 5mm foamex on a 18mm ply backboard and the hook on numbers in 10mm with holes drilled in the top of each one to hook on a screw on the main board.
Does this sound like I’m approaching this the right way or is there something I’ve missed??
Any help/advise appreciated as I know diddly squat about cricket!!
    many thanks,
    John
    😀

the foamex, as long as in white and fixed to the backing board by 1″x1″ angle around the dge and not pinning it through the face would be fine. if you pin it onto the board it will buckle/rise in areas that are not pinned distorting the board in a wekk or two.. looks bad. 😮

the part of the board that you are going to screw in the hooks-
drill the foamex with a larger hole first, before screwing in the hook.
i.e. if the hook is a 4mm thread drill a 6mm hole in the foamex only. then screw the hook into the wood panel. if you screw directly into the foamex and wood you will possibley cause the same problem as above.

the numbers you are hooking on? are these squares with vinyl numbers
on them? but with a hole drilled in centre at top…
if so 5mm foamex would be fine. personaly i would use alluminium squares as they will last much longer. but foamex should be fine. 🙄

    Thanks for those pointers…
the numbers would last longer in ally, but as I’m a beginner I thought foamex would be a lot easier for me to cut!!
I have told the club that they would have to treat the numbers with respect and they’re happy with that..
On the subject of attaching the main board to the ply, the angles a good idea, but…. this board will be carried in/out of the club house on a weekly basis so if they tip the whole sign forward whats stopping the foamex sagging under its own weight and ‘popping’ out of the angles grip??

why don’t you use 10mm correx? i know it does not look as good as foamex, but it’s light and easy to attatch to a board & take off and it does not buckle like foamex!! just a thought 😛
watch your small numbers, i sponsore a local rugby team, and use 3mm foamex, cause they get pinched every week for souvineirs!! and i’m always replacing

i wouldnt imagine that being possible mate. even if it was they would have to hold it completely upside down.
again, i wouldnt see this as a worry for you. i have done many signs using this method.
if they are lifting in and out, even more reason to have the angle. over time the edges become bashed and broke. this wont happen with the angle around it.
