We have been considering putting a machine in the unit to take credit and debit cards – I was wondering if any of you guys have one – does it help or hinder is it expensive does anyone recommend one company over another to provide the machine etc.

We have had a few people ask us recently if we take cards as our unit fronts onto a main road so we get some retail type trade – we have also had a few bad debtors recently who have asked if they could pay by credit card hence the thought that it may be a good idea.

any thoughts / Advice gratefully received

Colin we have steamline, if you are a member of the FSB they were doing a deal first 3 months free, don’t know what the deals are now.
we got fed up of people coming in having the design work done then they say yes I want to go ahead, so we say leave a deposit and we will get on with it only to hear oh!! I haven’t got any money 👿 how do you go shopping with out money 🙄 anyway now we can take a card most pay up front in full 😀

its going to cost you a least £20 ish /month but its all good.
your bad dept would have been paid
you don’t have to go down the bank to pay it in
its in your bank in 3 days
its just about 100% safe money.
can’t recommend any one just shop around. couple of new co started up.

there are some new rules that i have to sign up to not sure what yet.

Get one – it’s the best thing we ever did.

We’re the same as Lynn – Streamline, (originally through Natwest then took up the FSB offer). Not as expensive as you might think.

Same as Phil and Lynn Stream line – we have 2 merchant accounts with them we moved one over from Bank Of Scotland as we were very happy with Streamline and have been for years. Problem free. Easy to set up.

You can take payments over the phone, easier to collect bad debt as stated because its easier to pay, – the forgot the cheque book doesnt work when you take cards! dont know how one could manage without! We are considering charging the 1-2% to cover our charges as so many folk now do this. We are still thinking about this though.

As Lynn says FSB memebership will get you some discount/freebie so worth joining!

FSB/Streamline here. Pay £15 rental per month & get good FSB transaction discounts.

I hate when people charge me a surcharge.

1-2% should be incorporated into the price.

Agree, charging people to take their money is not a very good idea.

If you read the small print from the credit card system supplier it also says that charging the customer is against the rules as it is discouriging people from using their card.
We are with Lloyds its the best thing we have done. Tell the customer " If you want credit thats fine we take credit cards".

    Thanks for all your input

I don’t belong to FSB at the moment are there many other benefits of joining.

Had another client this morning come in the unit ordered signs asked him for a deposit and he didn’t have any money on him so sent him off to the cashpoint – probably wont come back !

Definitely gonna go for it thanks all.

Im sure our Streamline deal is that if we put £10 or more a month through then the machine rental is only £10PCM, but if we dont put the £10 through then we have to pay about £20.

I’ve also been looking at maybe getting card facilities, does the price you guy quote £15-20ish include a terminal or is that for a virtual terminal?
What % do they take.. Had a guy come round today with prices, but not I’m not sure if they are competitive.

This amount is for the terminal rental. The prices will vary. What prices were you quoted ?

streamline supply and install the terminal foc, and its a real one.
the monthly charge is for rental
Not sure what you mean by virtual?

Hi Peter cheers, the virtual one is done via the computer, so if someone call you enter their detail on computer instead of on the terminal.. if that make sense?
