i was intrested in giving this ago when we first got signlab. i cant remember what or where but i stumbled across something either in the software or something i was using along side the software. it didnt actually create a font i think you could just edit an existing font and safe it.
i started doing it but quickly realised i was going about it all wrong so i scrapped it and never got back to doing another.
i would still like to give it a go mind you but i think it would take allot of time to get something that i would consider actually using. 😕

let us know how you get on phil would be intresting to see.

yeh i would be too…as ed has been going on about doing a few fonts for ages, hes gonna do them by hand and i’ll tidy them up ready to use, but getting the time to start it is always a big problem 😀

yeh i think it will be time consuming to get it right…

who knows, we could be using Fenton Bold and Rowlands Script on our signs some time soon. 😛

I wouldn’t know where to begin, but I know it’s a long process. Not only do you have to make all the characters, then you have to adjust the kerning for certain groups of characters, then you have all the symbols that go with it. Then when you finally finish it and try to market it, someone gets a hold of it and posts it for all to use. (:)

Saw this post, thought i would chime in. I have created several fonts using two pieces of software called Fontographer & Fontlab Studio. Its actually pretty easy to use its not very difficult. What is difficult is the planning of how each glyph is going to interact with the next one e.g. I have done two script fonts and never want to do them again. I would imagine doing a couple of "Wingdings" or some cool fun fonts wouldnt be such a pain, but fancy fonts and ones made for corporate work are a pain in the . . . Very time consuming and I am very meticulous about my work, so every little detail was carefully looked over.

The only time worth making them is if you have a client looking for a brand image that they wish to retain throughout a marketing campaign so you can keep everything consistent.

That’s exactly what Alison said to me today.

Anyway – didn’t stop me having a go at creating my own font which I have posted in the file swapping forum.

It’s so bad it’s good – I’m gonna use it when I get asked for a cheap sign to be made :lol1:

Doing this has made me realise how much work and effort goes into creating a font. I enjoyed having a go anyway 😕
