  • cracks appearing in vinyl at corners of cut out letters

    Hi Everyone,
recently I’ve applied some negative cut vinyls on glass and vehicle paint where applied dry after a couple weeks cracks have appeared at the corners of the cut out letters but when the vinyl was applied wet it didn’t crack. I normally use oracle 651 but its happened with other brands too so it must be down to my poor application technique, any help would be appreciated.

i wouldn’t imagine it happening with Oracal 651…
reason i say it i would have guessed it was down to cheap vinyl.
cracking of the vinyl can and does happen with cheap vinyls over shrinking.
i guess it could happen to vinyl by its shelf by date too… but i am guessing there.

how long does this take to happen?

is there a small halo of adhesive around the perimeter of the vinyl?

do you have a picture of it you could attach to this thread?

    Hi Robert,
    thanks for the speedy reply.
The vinyl is definitely Oracle 651 shade 073 dark gray, the other is silver alternative brand. This problem hasn’t happened withe any other dry applications but since posting I’ve realized a common denominator…I cleaned the panels and glass with rapid remove a sort of orange scented glue remover supplied by the vinylcorp. This may be the cause, perhaps some underlying residue it leaves behind?

I think it’s been stretched slightly during install if it only happened dry, this can happen even with app tape, but there must have been a tiny failure point in the corners to start with. Try cutting just those letters again on some scrap, and have a close look at those areas.
