  • Cracking Window Graphics!

Hi all, just thought I’d put this one out there for your comments.

I applied some window graphics to some ground floor offices a while back and have recently received a call from the client asking me to refit 1 window due to the glass being cracked.

When the Glazier came to fit the new piece of glass he advised my client that the glass cracking was due to the colour of the vinyl on the window and prolonged exposure to sunlight.

The window measured 1500mm wide x 1150mm high to which I applied a 2 colour 1m diameter logo (a blue and orange ying yang shape) backed up with frosted covering the whole window – all internal.

Is the Glazier bonkers or can prolonged periods of sunlight and specific vinyl colours really create cracks in windows? I’ve read the old thread discussing heat guns and glass but no heat gun was used or has ever been needed when I apply window graphics.

    Your thoughts please 🙂

    Hi Dan

There was a thread about this problem recently, and the consensus was that it is the ratio of glass v vinyl absorbing heat (sunlight) causing expansion of the glass, then cooling at different rates. Darker vinyls being worst.
At least this is how I understood it, probably wrong though 🙄 and haven’t explained very well.

    Thanks Lorraine,

I don’t suppose you have any more details on the topic of the thread?
Would make an interesting read. I’ll have another search and see what I
    can find.

    Thanks for your help

I can’t remember the topic but it was someone asking for different advice than glass lettering (I think)
I said not to use a heat gun and then there was a big discussion.
I have heard of a window cracking due to just the graphic.
Usually it is with older windows and dark colors.
I think you have to leave a bit of plain window showing arounf the border to help with expansion/contraction.
Someone will surely chime in soon with more info!
    :lol1:

    There’s also something here https://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.p … cks#316474
but it’s about heating glass again.
Can’t remember where I gleaned my little nugget of info-maybe I dreamed it! 😕
