I dont wish to winge about suppliers, but ive been using Cox (quantum) in leeds since i started my business, im not like paul at SR who buys tonnes of plastic every week, i buy little and often, you know 1 sheet of this a 5 sheets of that every few weeks.

So i called Cox like usual today to say that i lost my wallet on the train on monday and could i put some money direct into their account or could the driver pick up a cheque, i was told because i was having the plastic cut, then i couldnt have COD, and even if i put cash into their account it wont show for a few days (which is complete rubbish) and ill have to call a different number for accounts and then call them both back when ive deposited the money, and i can have my plastic on monday..

Great i thought.. i want to use it over the weekend!!

So i had a quick search on UKSignBoards for Amari as ive seen it mentioned many times before, called the leeds depot and told them my problem, Jason at Amari said just fax your order on letterheaded paper and give the driver a cheque in the morning when he delivers.. WOW this is the kind of service you need.

    Thumbs up for Amari

you can find your local depot at http://www.amariplastics.com/contacts/contact_locator.asp

Its not just the Leeds branch Kevin they are very good in Scotland as well, I would use them more but with UKSG discounts from Europoint I cant really afford to. I did a job a while ago where I had to match a particular foam colour it turned out to be an amari foam. Never used them before and didn’t have a credit card at the time. Phoned them to find out about ordering and they told me they could deliver next day and just to have a cheque made out for the driver to collect, so easy and really helpful to.

I was talking to my local Amari branch yeasterday with regard to my perspex “moan” I found them very very helpful, in providing information and very willing to send me a swatch sample and spec sheets etc….

At the same time i was asked where i brought my foam PVC from, i said i was a member of the UK Sign Group and that i got a good discount from Europoint display, the guy asked me for a few prices i pay at the moment, and said he was sure he could work me something out and that he would like to have my business………… so we’ll see what the postman brings 😀

I pay just over £10 for an 2440 x 1220sheet of 3mm white Amari Foam will advise other sheet costs if anyone is interested it makes good sense for everyone to advise what they are paying we will then know what our target price is

exactly what im saying we should all pay the same from all branches of all suppliers we would however expect a hefty discount on big orders lets all post a list of what we are actually paying for all types of materials ass can then be kicked!

I would really like to know some of the prices you pay for sheet plastics foam acrylics etc, it would help to know if I am being ripped off or more to the point if there is much room to negotiate better prices with the supplier.Heres hoping you may be able to contribute to this thread.
    regards steve

This whole business of pricing is one that gets my back up.
I fail to see why a company should have a price list that they can give discounts of 40/50/60% from.
My pricing is based on an honest amount that I consider I need for a given job. I don’t discount because I believe my prices are correct in the first place.
None of these companies that discounts can ever be trusted to be giving an honest price no matter what discount they give you.
Take Europoint for instance, Rob worked hard to negotiate a good discount with them for UKSG members, and Europoint presumably are happy with the profit they make from each individual member, so why do they charge more for none members!
(OFF and RIP are words that come to mind) I’m not picking on Europoint alone; all suppliers I find are tarred with the same brush. If it is possible to sell a single sheet, of what ever, to one customer for £20 why charge customer No.2 £25.
It’s all down to honest pricing, and I’m afraid we see very little of it.

My world would be a much simpler place. 😉

That’s it I’m done, and I feel better for it.

    Hi
i use Amari at Hornchurch in Essex and have found them to be very helpful again they seem to have various prices for the same product. Quote for 240mm x 122mm x 10mm foamex at a quanity rate of 15price quoted was £34.00+ orders a single sheet following week payed just £30, am i glad that the first was just a price enquiry needless to say when i need the 15 sheets i will be using the £30 as the start price for a decent deal

    Regards

    KTF

    just a thought,

how many of you guys would make a sign for a customer that gives you an order over the phone and will pay you when you deliver?

a few rotton apples spoil it for the honest sign makers,

the check bouncers, we’ve all encountered them

    Hi Alan
Welcome to boards mate… good to see another register with a picture. Thank you very much!

On the subject of what you have said. I agree to an extent.
However, as much as I would like to agree more I don’t think I can because Business is all about making money.
(Not trying to preach here, honest) with the suppliers, it’s down to volume. Ill try explain what I mean.

If a customer comes into you and says I want 1 sign 2 foot square. You say ok £10 you know your mark up maybe £8 and that’s fine. Good money! But say the customer wants 100 but he normally pays £9 from the guy down the road.
    Do you say:
    (A) Sorry! That’s my price and maybe loose £1000 with £800 profit
    (B) Well ok ill give you it for £850, £50 less than the guy down the road. & Make £650 profit

I know what one I would go for, even if I weren’t happy about doing it.

There is other reason suppliers may do this also. Take europoint and the UKSG.
Why/how can they offer these prices. Well negotiate, barter, call it what we may. Its good business sense at the end of the day. The group is treated as a single customer. We all get the same prices for vinyls. Low at that yes.
And yes the backside has fallen from the profit europoint may have made on an individual company.
But they have gained 60 new accounts. So they made no profit from them before and now they at least make something. But what they are more liable to be interested in is the fact they now have potentially 60 new customers for products that are not under discount from them, but their accounts are now open and are more liable to purchase. A risk yes but….

Take an advert on the television:
Beans from Asda 4p a can??? Fresh orange 9p a carton??? Where is the profit?
They don’t look at it like that. They look at it as “lets get them into the shop, whilst they are there. They will start to buying the regular priced products” even though it was the beans and the juice that got them there.
    And we do!

i dont agree with lots of things suppliers and europoint do for that matter. but i can somtimes see why they do it.. even if i dont like it.

    Hi Robert,

I’m in complete agreement with you on volume discounts; I would always consider discounting for volume work, but this is about fair-trading not volume sales.
Your reference to Asda’s loss leader beans is a good example of fair-trading??? All customers get the beans at the same price, and Asda treats all their customers as one collective body, and all get treated with the same contempt (sorry I mean respect). 😀

It’s the array of prices offered to different customers, of similar purchasing status, which I dislike. And how could I received a 65% discount when I recently purchased a piece of acrylic, this had nothing to do with volume as I’m a very low user of sheet material. The original price is obviously a fudge to give the company as much leeway as possible to deceive their customers on price. At least beans have the correct price plastered on the shelf up-front for all to see.
Will this allusive shop 😉 have prices (on the shelf) for all to see!

    Just call me Meldrew. 😡

One more thing Robert; get to bed at night, I saw the time of your post; you’ll end up old and grey like me.

Well, you one price guys are going to hate me!

I’ll charge an individual customer more for no better than reason than that I don’t like their attitude. If I take an active dislike then God help them. 😀

My pricing will match my personal agenda and fairness doesn’t come into it.

    I like it John 😀

But these suppliers are very often large national or international companies and shouldn’t conduct their business in the same way as a sign co run by an ornery old bearded chap. 😉

Just a minute; that sounds like me, how do I edit this thing 😮
