Hi Carrie, these huge building ones , I assume its mesh banner and they’re made in sections and stitched together, I ask this because I was looking at some the other day and cannot see the join, anyone explain how its done? as I’d like a go at doing these.
Also has anyone a calculation method for dpi or pixels per inch I should be consulting for print work relative to sign size, I had some somewhere but lost it!

Also I was recently given artwork at 150dpi for a 1830mm x 610mm print is this good enough quality or can I re-save the dpi somehow to a larger value using photoshop etc?

    hi outline
the building one looks like a building wrap…
this is basicaly digital printed vinyl stuck to the glass of the building. doesnt really work unless the part being covered is all glass face.
normal the vinyl used is something like controvision. this way the people in side can see out as normal but from the outside you see this huge image. its not always controvision but most of the time its a sign/ad like this.

the banner one you are talking about is normaly for building with scaffolding up for long periods of time. basicaly the digital print is printed onto banner “mesh” (perforated banner material) you can print directly onto this with your cadet.
the idea behind it is it hides the horrible scafold structure.
at the same time the people owning the building make money from the advertiser, the printer makes money from the sale & im sure the scaffold people will get a cut from it in some form. you need to use the perforated
banner matrial to allow the window to pass throug it.. other wise in bad weather the whole thing could act like a sail and pull it down.

regarding dpi for huge prints.. from back posts i gather 75dpi is the working size for the likes of a vehicle wrap.. ide advise doing a search. rodney gold and richard at raccoon advised me on various things regarding output.. im actualy gonna have to refer back to this and print it myself next week 😉

Yep I was going to say what Rob said *cough* ummmm ok perhaps I was not 😛

Outline I actually thought it was a banner on the building aswell and was wondering how they would fix/fit it safely and how you would go about making something like it? But as Rob said its probably contravision or the like ……… great job though … or at least I think so ….. a lot of work involved!!

Im sure Rodney our “Man in the Know” will probably be able to provide info on the dpi query or as Rob said check back on old posts?

    What bloke?

Oh yes, the two on the access platform 😳

So are the large mesh ones stitched together out of overlapped panels then trimmed and stitched, If underlapped and stitched I’d expect a dark line to run either horizontal or vertical to the trained eye to be present?
The mesh stuff i’ve been looking at has no apparent join, and its to big to print in one go, honestly!

You know what my next questions gonna be don’t you?

you would need more than money to get me up there…
ide have thought they would have used a huge cherry picker to do this sort of thing.. so maybe im wrong.. the only thing i can think of is.. perhaps the window guys were stripping the vinyl and not applying? 😕

reason i asked was a friend of mine who lives in hacknay london, rebuilt the buildings in the city after the bombs a while back, and he was on danger money i called it funny money…though not as funny as footballers 😉
he got in his hand £3500 to £5000 a week for going up so high!! depending on how many hours he put in!! 😮 😮

there are several specialist access firms that are used by sign companies for installation/maintenance work – i was on site at ikea in croydon when they came to carry out the maintenance to the signs at the top of the chimneys (if you know the store you’ll know the signs i mean).

several of the guys working for pearce maintenance were trained in rope access work so that they could carry out maintenance on some of the odeon cinemas but i agree with you rob – there aint enough money in the world…

    Britain’s most dangerous job

    By Matt Ball
    Last updated October 18 2004

    And the ‘winner’ is…

Window cleaning is the most dangerous job in Britain, while being a vicar is one of the safest, according to a new report by Churchill Insurance.

The report found that window cleaners have more chance of being killed or injured than police, firemen or even soldiers.

Churchill spokesman Greg Dawson says: “Window cleaners were top of the pile as they are working at height, on ladders, with one or more implements, and need incredible balance and concentration. They could be described as circus performers without the safety net.”

The table below shows the ten riskiest professions. Further down the rankings came jobs such as bailiffs and taxi drivers, followed by beer tasters, housewives and journalists.

Vicars, pharmacists and insurance brokers were rated as having the most sedate and secure professions.

    Britain’s ten most dangerous professions
    1. Window Cleaner
    2. Soldier
    3. Fireman
    4. Offshore fisherman
    5. Pilot
    6. Police officer
    7. Roofer
    8. Scaffolder
    9. Tree surgeon
    10. Sign Fitter 😮 😉

Our local vicar aint that safe. If he has a go at me for walking my dog round the churchyard again I’ll knock him out.

I assume this list will affect insurance for said careers. Bit of a bummer for window cleaners, most of the ones I see never go more than 2 foot off the floor.

Anyway, looking at the pictures Rob posted earlier in this thread, I once went down the side of the Vantage West building in London (M4 A406 Jct) in a window cleaner’s cradle. NEVER AGAIN! On one of the days it was foggy and you couldn’t see the ground! I seriously still have bad dreams about that one 12 years later. If you remember the volvo advert where they chucked the car off the top of the building, that was it. I watched the filming; 12 cars wrecked…..am I blathering on a bit? Yes, thought so.

Here’s a link to a company that is next door to me here, they build their own huge machines today, and cover buildings etc in large images, and are one of the best known here, and are pretty well known internationally.
