Councils now dictating designs!
Posted by Dave Bruce on August 23, 2006 at 10:17 pmI did a layout for a customer last week using his designs, superimposed on a photo of the building. The council have said he cannot have the design and must use one font, letters of the same colour and must be straight on the facia!
I have to redo the layout and send to the council for approval, I think I will ask them for their design guidlines that they follow.
The building is listed but the last sign was funky and colourful.
Anyone else come accross this?

yep your not alone dave…..happens to me all the time 😕 i have a job on friday where the customer has submitted her layouts, the council changed them……….but ive been told by the customer to still go ahead with the job 😕 customer said they would deal with the council themselves …… 😮 so im not so bothered this time, as long as i get paid and the customer is happy….im happy too 😉

Dave in an area in Luton which they were re-developing you are only allowed to use certain fonts to a certain size, but that was 3-4 years ago, and now they have lost interest so now anything goes !! councils have a certain kind of logic ie: no logic at all 😀 would be interesting if we had and council members from where ever looking in maybe they could explain their "certain kind of logic" 😀

Councils are run by wankers full of their own self importance. I just ignore them 😛

we get it time to time…
we do allot of taxi adverts. not wraps, but the ads across two doors.
we cover the same area all the time, just adverts that vary… still we must submit the artwork for a go ahead before every job.
we dont actually submit, we give that pleasure to the taxi firms. 😉 -
What gets me is all these blody Paypoint signs, lottery etc and others……………just slapped up all over the place around shop facias.
They spoil the overall look not a sensible facia design.
I’m between 2 totally different councils 1 is full of clipboard jobsworths…..the other couldn’t give a sh*t.

Well you live and learn. Just remembered this morning about another sign shop in Bath that was telling me his customer could only use black and white for his sign, but the shop a few doors down had a multi coloured sign without permission, yet they wouldn’t do anything about it.
So if you have the brass neck to go ahead without asking, you will probably get away with it.
I agree with Phil.

I have a potential customer who has been told he can’t have an illuminated sign on his shop, even though he is 3 doors away from a fast food chain with a bloody great big lightbox on the wall! Conservation area, my arse. The rules seem more flexible for big companies coming to town. No wonder independent traders are dying on their arses.

I have no idea what I am talking about here, but how the hell is a p…y little council member gonna tell McDonalds or WalMart or Woolworths or Harrods and the like, that they can’t use their own corporate signage.
My guess is it aint gonna happen.
As was mentioned earlier..the term ‘wankers’ comes to mind.
Ohh yeah, gooday all.

our councils here let you have just about anything in signage, they just charge a higher sign tax for a better sign 🙄
They do have regulations about the type of sign, sizes and positions, but I’ve never had to get approval on colours. Fabrication methods yes, colours no.
if it is a lighted or lightbox sign, your sign tax can multiply by 10 times in some instances. especially on a busy thoroughfare
its a joke. councils seem the same the world over tho

I am surprised by my learned colleague’s opinion of council jobsworths. I have a soft spot for them.
It’s down by the river under a tree!. 😀

Hey John, one needs to be careful with such thoughts.
Over hear we have laws against allowing efluents to wash into a river.

About 15 years ago I was asked by a customer if
I could sort his Fascia out for him, the council had
taken exception to his sign and had slapped a prohibition
order on him 5 years previously and he felt he had p*****d
them of for long enough!
I phoned the woman in the planning dept at the council who had
been giving him grief and explained that we would like to replace
it with cream perspex insert, before I had a chance to carry on
she said "whats Perspex?" (:) (:) (:) How can you deal with
these people???? Who pays there wages and why!!!! 👿Carol

There’s absolutely no way shopkeepers apply to the Council round where I live in North London:
Its like Hong Kong! Illuminated boxes, projecting boxes everywhere:
Everyone trying to outdo the other.I think the Council can’t cope and just let it go. At the same time, I did a sign for a solicitor and of course he had to do it the right and proper way.
It took about a year and half to finally get it approved! It was only a 4ft x 3ft freestanding signboard for goodness sake! (hot) (hot)

Hey John.
Not heard from you for a while, it’s good to see you back 😀
What happened to you – did you get 6 months inside for not paying your council tax or something 😉
-
Hi Phill
Looks like that doesn’t it :police3:
No! Just been busy with other stuff
Got quite a few heavy commitments which takes volumes of my timeBut glad to be back among the throng 😀

Hello John, nice to see you 😀
I think all councils can be a bit of a pain. We are doing a job at the moment, the company has a modern looking image. Council says that they have to use ornate bracket with wooden swing sign to fit in with the area ….. even though the shops either side of this place have modern signage? They have even stated that any projecting sign would have to be placed higher than the lottery sign next door as it would look out of place if they were level to each other??? 😕 They make it up as they go along Im sure.
