  • Cost for installing V sign

Posted by Dave Bruce on February 19, 2007 at 10:22 am

Just wondering what the average price was for installing a ‘V’ style ‘FOR SALE’ projection sign. I have been asked to do a few lately and the first company said they pay £50 which seems a little on the low side to say the least.

These are the Correx signs on a flimsy wooden frame.

    Cheers

Tell them you are not a charity, and the price you quote is non-negotiable.

Depends on your circumstances and how many you are doing.

Ask them where they get their 50 quid signs from and so an anonymous call and get a quote yourself.

Theres a cheap company on the web somewhere that does do them at this price

things to consider and explain to your customer..

*Does that price include delivery and fitting
*Does their service offer a quality product
*Does YOUR service offer a well built SOLID STRUCTURED FRAME…or a £50 flimsy one!! :lol1:

This is purely for installation they send the sign to me just a case of screwing two battern to the wall screw the signs to the batterns then screw the outer edge together.

£50 for no outlay, easy money I would say (depending on travelling time etc.)

Consider the height you may be expected to work at and the space available for you the safely set up your ladder. What sort of surface are you drilling into? I once had to drill into half round flint stone which was awkward.

Are there any Health & Safety concerns to the public while you are fitting theses boards?

£50 per board doesn’t seem unreasonable when you consider some of the
variables of fitting this type of work.

Had to fix these boards once in a narrow busy one way street in central London – nightmare job – every time a delivery vehicle drove up the road we had to move the ladder……..and the commuters surging out of the nearby underground were a big liability to us too. 🙂

I know what you are saying. The first one I did was on a thin aluminium facia board made up of vertical strips that were just pushed into a frame, it was a nightmare to get a fixing and took ages. The next one was at ground level flat against the wall, but you still have to load van drive to site unload cut two lengths of wood, drill and fix and drive back.

    Thanks for the feedback

Dave, I was asked to do these for one of the larger estate agents in Scotland a couple of years ago, I can’t remember what they were paying at the time it was less than £50 obviously. They were using one of the larger installation firms who would install these when they were out doing other jobs so sometimes they wouldn’t go up for quite a while after the property went on the market. They wanted them up quicker but weren’t prepared to pay any more money. I didn’t take the work in the end because the traveling I would sometimes have to do would mean that I would be out half the day for a few quid.

Cheers Martin, that’s the thing, they always want them up yesterday.

Dave, that was the problem for me, they wanted them up within a maximum of 24 hrs from them informing me and wanted to pay the same money they were currently paying for a service they weren’t happy with. I could have spent 2 to 3 hours driving to put up one sign and when I got back to the unit find an email for another one in the same town or village. The contract seemed to go backward and forward between two big installation companies who sometimes took a week or so to put them up because they would only do it if they had some other work in that area.

They didn’t offer any idea of how much work it would be for me or how many of the installations would be fairly close so the way I looked at it was what if most of the installs are quite a way away from me so it always costs me money to do the work.

Are you expected to remove it for the 50 quid or is that an erect price only?

Estate Agents in general are an impatient species & I’ve found this work only pays if you are geared up to do them in "runs".

In most cases it would be a two man job with someone needed to foot the ladder….unless you have some form of stabilizers of course.

Weather will also play a big part as these things are virtually impossible to put up safely if the wind is up.

Would they put enough work your way that you could put a couple of days aside a week to cater for them?…they might prefer that rather than a hap hazard service they might currently be getting

Glenn I only get one to put up every 3/4 months the local estate agents put their own up, but its the big boys from the city that send them up for me to fit. Obviously it would cost them a lot more to come up themselves and install them but I am not in business to rip people off just a fair price. It was the first company that contacted last year that said they normally pay £50 to have them installed, I agreed to do it to see how easy or difficult it was. Like you say it needs to be calm weather for these boards to go up.

    Next one is £55.

Dave, do they ship the boards up to you ready for you to install? If they do then you may be able to make a bit extra by offering to make the boards up yourself which would save them the cost of having someone else make up the frames and the transport costs. It wouldn’t be difficult to collect some timber suitable to make up a couple of frames so material costs wouldn’t be to high, its just a case of if you have the time to do it. Might add a bit extra onto the job and make it a bit more worth while.

Good idea Martin, but I don’t really have the time to design them then apply vinyl, I have actually stopped any new orders til Mid April otherwise I would be letting my regular customers down as I am struggling to cope with demand. The boards come ready and are screen printed which I don’t do.

Dave, I was thinking of the wooden framework rather than the actual correx signs, there is no way you would be able to match the money they are probably paying for screen printing . They could send you a bundle of correx signs for you to keep quite cheaply as there will be next to no weight in them but if you are busy with your regular customers then I would keep them happy first every time, big companies don’t seem to have any loyalty at all.
it was just a thought, if you had a bit of spare time it might have been worth it but if you are that busy then I wouldn’t even mention it to them.
