  • Cordless heatguns or alternatives?

Posted by Nick Dowell on April 12, 2014 at 5:34 pm

    Hi all,

so, your out on site fitting or removing some vehicle graphics, 100m + from any power points or its simply a 2 minute job and would take 15 minutes for the dealership to find the keys…

Has anyone seen or know of a cordless heat gun? OR does anyone have any clever alternatives – i.e a power inverter and 240v socket in their van. The only stubbling block I can see is having enough power for the 2000w heatgun.

Just wondering what options are out there.

I have fitted an invertor in my van with an auxiliary battery for jobs like that! Works a treat

Self lighting Gas blow torch , works a treat, not that popular here but very popular in the states, look on YouTube you’ll see loads of guys using them on wrap vids

Ian have you tried to explain the use to the insurance company heat gun is bad enough.

I have used one, but don’t think a watching customer would appreciate it

    Nothing they can say Chris,
I’m a professional in my field of work using a tool that’s required by my profession to get a quality job done, thats what they insure.
the plumber type ones are switch based, they stop work as soon as you take your finger off the switch, less dangerous than a heat gun TBH.

Quite agree with you Ian and think they are safer in some ways but not by the insurance company I spoke to about it.

back in the day you used to be able to go to B&Q and get a heat gun which looked like a regular heat gun which was run on the calor gas bottles from camping stoves…shame they stopped making them, they were great.

What insurance Company was that Chris? Not had a problem myself & have been using one on & off for years. Only problem I ever had getting insurance with a gas appliance was the workshop heater that used a big propane bottle.

There is one available, as we bought one recently. It doesnt have the flame like the ones those American wrap guys use

I currently use a rothenburger surefire 2 automatic ( plumbers style self igniting gas touch ) It does give a naked flame. Unfortunately I’ve been asked to stop using it on two sites now. ( when doing fleet vehicles ) Basically each site has said no naked flames due to their H and S policy and insurance ( we are not talking about oil refineries here either, just bog standard fleet depots )
However on both occasions its worked in my favour as it means I cannot finish the job and they have to pull the vehicles inside like they were supposed to in the first place !
I have also invested in a 2.7kva kipour silent generator which I carry in the van. I would never ever run a heat gun off an invertor running off your vehicle battery, thats just asking for trouble !

Thanks for the link Jon, that looks like a great bit of kit how do you find using it, is the heat instant ? It looks like it runs off the standard lighter fuel replacement cans ?
