You can take out a trademark to protect the design. For this you need to contact the patent office, fill in loads of forms and pay them for the privilege of being granted a trademark 🙄

However, why bother when you automatically have copyright over any original artwork you have produced.

You are therefore entitled to give or sell this copyright to your client for an agreed fee. Just to make it official looking write the message “Copyright 2003 (your clients name) all rights reserved” on the design

    Jim,
I think you can register the logo as a trademark – costs a couple of hunderd quid and it’s a long process as far as I know. I looked into it for a client a few months ago and I seem to remember there’s a website for the trademarks office – try a google search.
    Cheers

I looked into this to secure my Boxing Brand logo….Warrior Boxing. It costs pot loads although the exact figure escapes me at the moment I think it was in excess of a thousand pounds.

In time it becomes impossible for anyone to use your logo without fear of legal action as they would not have the proof that you would hold on simple things such as advertisements, leaflets etc.,

My question is, Is this somthing we as signmakers should be dealing with?

I mean your doing all the leg work for a company finding out how to go about copyrighting the logo and what will you get for you time??

I’m with Lorraine here. Get them to do a search on the web por the patents office and let them go. If you give them a useable jpeg of the logo so they can print off one for the patents office then you’ve helped out lots.

I tried to register a business name a few years ago. man what a hassle I gave up. Large companies have people that do nothing but find names for future enterprises and trademark the names. You just can’t fight them. I had an objection from BP over my name ( Auto Pride) Man I ran and didn’t use the name.

    Good luck.

I agree with Leeroy just provide them with the copy.

As Leeroy said big Co. have a dept for this sort of thing or a legal dept. which deals with it.

Some names you can’t register for a business as they are generic, so I have been told by a couple of clients who have tried. But I think its all down to money & how big a fish you are.

You could also enclose a copy of the logo design in an envelope and send it back to yourself recorded post keep it sealed then if a dispute arrises you have proof.
