Hi Gavin, I think that overall these van layouts are OK, I like the Britool van the most.

You need to pay attention to your sub/secondary copy ie. telephone numbers service descriptions on the Malteos and Foxi jobs. They need to be reduced in size to fit the panels. ‘Also inside Megasun etc. lets the job down, if it was smaller and centred on the bottom of the doors it could have improved the overall look hugely. Try using a slightly different font than Helvetica, just doesn’t look good to me.
The rear of the MCB Transit could’ve been tightened a little with the copy not being so close to the top and bottom of the panel.
I think you almost cracked with the Britool van though, this looks great. I would just alter the tel’ number.

Keep up the good work Gavin, as you say, just as good if not better than many layouts seen here.

Hi Neil… thanks for the comments… Britool was entirely my handywork.. Foxy was a bit of both but the customer was adamant on the layout.. Matteos was so persistent with his design – it was a shambles originally. I tried to get it better than it ended up.. I see about the transit being to close to top and bottom..

I’ll get the book asap.. Cheers

Gavin your stuff is on par with my early stuff.
After I read the Mike Stevens book (even just looking at the layouts is good) it opened my eyes and changed my whole life.
Neil’s comments are all 100% correct.
I would go a bit further and say, when you are doing the vehicle or sign, YOU are the professional, and it is your job to say (for example) that an entire street address is just not needed on a van or that you won’t stack a phone number.
I didn’t say anything about the brush script, but buy yourself some nice scripts (work the cost into the price of the job) and delete Brush Script from your computer.
Is this the best stuff I’ve ever seen?
    No.
    Is it the worst?
    Not by a long shot.
At least you had the courage to post your work.
    Love…..Jill

Do yourself a favor though and get Mike Stevens book TODAY, don’t put it off any longer, honestly it’s the best money you will ever spend if your serious about signmaking. Other thing that I did that helped a lot was to look at signs and vans when I was out and about and study them, both good and bad, you can learn a lot from all of them.

Gavin, you won’t regret it I can promise you, another thing you might want to think about is taking a membership for the forum. No I’m not on commission I just think it’s a small investment to pay for what you get.
The Design forum would be a great place for you to learn and get help from other members like Jill.

One thing to remember is what Jill said about you being the Professional when dealing with customers, often they know exactly what they want when you first speak to them but quite often once you have explained why it might not be a good idea or suggested something that would work better they will change their minds.

I actually wouldn’t have done the Foxy job, if the customer were that insistent after I had explained that anything that low would get covered in dirt very quickly and the number just wouldn’t work the way they wanted it I would have told them to go else where (politely).
I’m lucky in that I have another income from a pension and can afford to turn work away if I don’t want to do it, with you running another business and making a good living from it are in a similar position really.
