  • Concrete Core drilling question, advice please?

Posted by Ryan Fairweather on October 4, 2019 at 3:00 pm

Has anyone used a concrete core drill or core drilling service for installing road signs into concrete?

We have a large quantity to produce and install for a very large client and would prefer a faster, cleaner method other than manual cutting and digging.
I am also offering chem fixing base plates rather than digging but it would be good to know if anyone has used such a service before.

    thanks in advance

We used one in the past, it was hired in for a new build factory around 10 years ago.

I have attached a picture of a man held upright stand core-cutter with diamond tip blade.

The one we had was mounted onto a mini-excavator boom and had an operator.
I could be wrong, but I think the excavator version would be more powerful, maybe quicker too as it can be slow process depending on depth etc.

The majority of the holes cored by the machine was for steel Ballards at each side of the factory doors, to the side of these we mounted posts with a series of Health & Safety Signs down them.

GAP Plant & Tool Hire offer the machines from memory. They have nationwide depots.

As long as the concrete foundation is sound, a base plate with anchor bolt fixings would suffice, depending on what’s going on the posts. (wind load)
The base plate option would be faster to erect on-site but slower to manufacture.
another thing you have to take into account with the base plate option is levelling the post vertical if the ground isn’t perfectly level. You could of course drill and chemical fix threaded rods to allow you to be able to adjust the level.

Thanks Robert. I appreciate you getting back to me.

That is exactly the type of device I was researching for. I was wondering how effective it was?
I think we have all probably fell foul of hiring or buying equipment to perform a task which in reality are actually a bit useless.
Because of the quantity of the signs required and wanting a neat hole of course, I was thinking of looking into an excavator type. The quicker we can get them all cut the less disruption for the client.

I am hoping to simply drill holes via a base plate, drop some M12 threaded rod in with Chem Fix and bolt down if I’m honest. We levelled them using spacers under the base plate the last time we did it and it was very effective.
It is for a new industrial estate built for a large online seller so it needs to be right.
