Collaboration offer, via instagram. Views?
Posted by David Wilde on August 15, 2020 at 10:39 amReceived an enquiry via the company Instagram page yesterday. A fashion brand wanted to ‘colab’ with us to add some branding to their office windows.
Turns out what they mean by ‘colab’, is for us to put branding in their window and, instead of paying for it, they will thank us on their social media.
Its like having money to spend on stuff, only better….

Simply put, we cant afford it.
Offer them a commission on all sales their social media exposure brings in, upto the cost of the job. I already know the answer.

Being a fashion brand they’re probably used to giving away stuff to get a celebrities endorsement. They probably think the whole world works that way.

It is a joke, but should a new “cashless system” be inforced, this may be the way of the world in the not so distant future.

To be fair to them, they had 40k plus followers. Which isn’t bad for a small independent. However the chance of even 1 percent of those followers seeing, liking and ordering similar for their company is next to zero in my opinion.
I did a canvas print for a ‘pop star’ and his ‘popstar’ girlfriend once. Both of them promoted my work online to over a million followers. Not sure Ive done any canvases since…

40k is a lot, but tiny when you break the audience down into categories.
By categories I mean those who potentially could/would look to buy something from you, then geographically broken down to whose in your region, Then take the tiny percentage from that number of “possible” customer to you. it is a very small percentage indeed. -
Absolutely. These kind of audience numbers are useful for advertising a new product or previously unseen service in order to get the message out there, but for a service like ours they are basically irrelevant

Unless you actively follow up with your own social media, complete with ‘push’ links to relevant product on your own website (normally with one-click to buy option) then you see very little if not zero return – Social media sales have to be very simply & easy to use for the end client, as the attention span will be low, before they click on to the next picture! After all we are a bespoke professional service, not a ‘dropship’ vendor.
Having worked with several national & multi national companies, I was surprised by the amount of work and money they spend for online promotions, one client has a Adwords budget of £1800 per month alone.
For our trade, you might get some ‘likes’ but this will rarely transition into work without serious work of your own.

I was in a Paperlinx meeting a while back. There was a couple of marketing guys present and they were discussing uksignboards.com and social media with me. I nearly spat my tea over them, when they told me they spend £20,000 per month on Google ad-words alone, ex-amount thousands on this and that with social media on top! Do not get me wrong, if the monthly total was £30k spend and £40k return then fair enough ist showing a profit, but the man-hours spent on content, artwork, monitoring it and processing sales etc must all, also be taken into account to justify it.
