    Hi

I have noticed in Illustrator that the black from CMYK is 100% K

    But isnt jet black

If however I change this too RGB it is a mix of percentages for black such as
    91,79, 62, 97

So the CMYK black isnt blake but will only fire the K head on my versacamm and the RGB black is black but will fire all the heads

What preference have other users got, is it best to only have the black head firing and hence use CMYK black or should I change so all four heads create the black of RGB

And in general should I use CMYK or RGB in illustrator?

    Cheers

I would print using CMYK and use rich black to get a deeper black like the RGB black

    Hope that makes sense

Common practice is to add a % of cmy to the 100% K. Different printers I have used will suggest the additional percentages, a bit of experimentation may be required.

Yes thart is what i thought, but in the end if you add a percentage of black to the CMYK then it isnt CMYK

I have asked as I have read a lot of posts that say that the majority of people print in RGB

    Cheers

If you print from an RGB file the rip will convert to cmyk as the printer can not print RGB as it’s light not ink when it converts the file you may get some colour shift so your other colours may not print as you expect. I would use C 60% M 40% Y 40% K 100% for a nice rich black you could use the roland colour library which has rich black in it RVW_BK22
