  • Cleaning / renovating old dibond sign

Posted by Myles Brewer on April 8, 2011 at 9:48 am

    Hi,

I have a customer who has asked if there is anything that could be done with their signs to clean them up & renovate them, see attached pics.

They sent me these pics & I haven’t yet seen them first hand, but I think they are engraved brass effect dibond from what she says & from pics.

Is there any solution that should or should not be used on these to clean up.

Or is it a complete waste of time even trying. I could obviously try to just sell new to them, but in the current climate people are obviously keen to try to hang on to what they have if they can.

I meant to add, Does anyone know what the font used is, as they’d like me to use it on some new signage for them

    Thanks
    Myles

Is she absolutely sure these are Dibond Myles?

    Hi Harry,

No not certain, in fact she just said "sort of engraved brass", but I thought that it wouldn’t be engraved brass as they’re pretty big at about 4ft (h)

I don’t think you could re-polish dibond with any degree of success (I am open to correction though)
But from the pics…they just don’t look like Dibond.

Think I’ll have to go & check them out.

Any idea what either of the fonts are in the meantime?

I wonder if they are made from a double-sided substrate.
It may be just as easy as turning them over and lettering the other side.
    But it probably won’t be.

    Gold eurosign engraving laminate?

If it is it’ll go silver if you rub it too much!

According to the customer it’s been there for about 20 years, but I don’t know how accurate that is. Has dibond or Eurosign engraving laminate been around that long?

Definitely Eurosign engraving material if it is that old. If you remove it there will be a good chance of it being silver on the back. If it is your only choice is to make a new one. If it has lasted 20 years he has had his moneys worth and then some, and should replace it.

Thanks for that Mike, I’ll be having a look at it on Monday morning so will check the back of it.

Would there be anything as durable as that these days that could be used to replace them? What sort of life would engraved dibond have?

Dibond is not really an engraving material. I personally wouldn’t use it. Just use the same material again, its still readily available from most material suppliers.
