Cleaning aluminium 3d letters
Posted by James Martin on February 11, 2009 at 2:14 pmJust got a tray with brushed silver diabond(or equivalent) 3d letters on a tray and it lookd a bit tarnished.
tried multi purpose cleaner, wipes, window cleaner, soapy water but as it dries it looks a bit……well not consistently brushed aluminum shiny.
Anyone know what to clean or polish with to get it looking as new as it is?

We use an impregnated rubber, rubbing block that you use with the grain.
Available in coarse, medium and fine. Great for panatrim frames as well.
Get mine from: http://www.pantograph.co.uk/index.htm

I don’t know if it would work but we use baby oil for cleaning Stainless steel. I also used some 3M Scotch-weld Cleaner(the citrus based stuff) the other day which worked well.
Either would be worth a try.
Cheers

Tks guys I just ordered a garryflex block here:
No-one would sell me the over the thing over the phone
One mob only supplied the ship yards lol.
If it doesnt work I’ll give the baby oil a go.

I’d try a very very light coat of baby oil to improve the finish

James, we use a very very light coat of baby oil to improve a dry flat finish on stainless steel, and so far I’ve found that an outside job is good for at least a year, although that’s subject to other factors in the environment where the sign is, and there’s no reason why the finish could last longer than a year. The main concern is that too much baby oil may attract dust, although in my opinion, I’d rather see a fine layer of dust, than the dried flat look of some metal finishes.

James,
Make sure that the surface isn’t laquer coated before yo go at it with an abrasive, I have a feeling that the Amari material is clear coated.Steve

Steve is correct, some brushed ally composit board has a clear coat laminate and will not work like proper alluminium being cleaned with one of these pads.
when using the pad make sure your rubbing in straight lines and try and go the length of the letter in one sweep… (along the grain)
the baby oil suggestion is a good one also, but i haven’t used on aluminum, only stainless steel letters.
also a stainless steel surface cleaner called sheila-shine is very good. -
I’m getting very worried about some of you lot in this thread with regard to baby oil! Shall be standing with my back in a corner of the bar at SignUK at this rate!

sheila-shine is very good – presumably that’ll be a product more familiar to Shane 😀
