  • Clean peel vinyl – recommendations please?

Posted by Gordon Smithard on November 17, 2015 at 8:54 pm

Just did a job which involved removing some old vinyl lettering, one colour came off cleanly without leaving any adhesive behind, yet another colour was a lot messier and I spent ages scraping the glue off.
Why is this? Obviously different makes of vinyl, and I don’t think any of them were cast as they didn’t feel soft enough.
Is there a make of vinyl that’s known for peeling off cleanly? Just in case I get asked to do a short term job which I’ll have to remove.

    Hi Gordon
Almost a rule of thumb…the more expensive the vinyl, the more cleanly it peels off. 😉
Most vinyls have an optimum temperature at which the glue goes up with the vinyl rather than staying on the substrate.

Buy a steam cleaner, it make taking old vinyl off easy and you usually bring most of the glue off with the vinyl, also you need to warming the panel behind the vinyl for the best results.

Mactac 8900 peels off easily (by design) without leaving any glue, as long as it’s not been on too long, I think they say a year or so.
I’ve used it on my own car before, during the world cup (big England graphics etc). Granted, it wasn’t on that long, a couple of months but came off without using any solvents, I was impressed…. (not by England I seem to recall)
