• choosing fonts

    Hi all

    Does anyone have any tips on choosing the right fonts for the right job
    or is it just a matter of choosing one that you think looks ok?
    I always seem to spend a lot of time looking for one, any tips would be great.

    Thanks Neil.

    It’s a matter of taste really. But also clichΓ©.
    For example, you are making a sign for a big heavy equipment firm.
    You don’t want to use some mincey-mincey script.
    On the other hand, you don’t want some big beefy font for a hairdresser.
    Or an evil tattoo looking font for a church or day care center.
    Imagine what the font makes you think of when scrolling through your collection.

    Antique Olive Nord= Trucking companies, tow trucks, heavy equipment
    Papyrus (yuck) Churches, Spas
    Brush Script (vomit) Race Cars, bars/pubs
    Old English=Churches
    Comic Sans (shudder) Day care centers, nurseries
    Avant Garde/Helvetica=Corporate
    Scriptina=Salons, health food
    Serpentine/Crillee=Auto Body/race cars
    Playbill=Country Western places/BBQ joints

    Those are just a few very stereotypical examples.
    But they seem to work well.
    It can be neat to think outside the box and choose something completely inappropriate, but only sometimes.
    Love….Jill

    I would agree with Jill,

    Every word there is has a font that suits it

    You don’t need many fonts IMO, using different weights of the same one can compensate for many different fonts.

    The art is using them correctly, that comes with experience and a natural eye for what words/names/companies suit what font.

    I would suggest looking all around you signs, tv, mags bill boards and see what works well and what is in vougue at the moment, the more you work with them you will develop your favourites and not spend half a day going through a list.

    did that make sense πŸ˜‰ probably not
