• Childhood Television?

Posted by Robert Lambie on December 10, 2010 at 8:44 pm

well, seeing as its friday! :lol1: :lol1:

I was browsing youtube last night and came across an old childhood TV program i would watch. I’m talking when i as between 4-9 years old.

TV is so different these days for our kids… not all bad, but some are really created to promote the cool kid, so it purposely generates revenue from merchandise and the like. e.g. "Hanna Montana" worth a fortune and my little girl loves it. anyway, not ranting at all… just watching what i watched then what my girl watches is so so different.

anyone else remember the very early TV they watched?

I used to like the Flintstones

Actually I only really watched it for Betty Rubble – I always thought she was too good for Barney 😳

WOW !

You had TV when you were 4 years old!!

In Namibia (called South West Africa back then… 😉 ) we only got TV in 1981. (I was in second grade) I still remember the excitement on the schoolgrounds: Are you going to get a colour or Black and white TV?? Sony or Phillips?? (TV’s were HUGELY expensive – in most cases about 1 months income for a middle class family.)

And then the programming! Censored, to conform to certain political and religious ideologies. Broadcasting started about 18h00, ended about 24h00.

I still dont watch TV. The "Free to Air" channels in Namibia ( only 2….) are PATHETIC. Government propaganda, and translated Mexican Soapies. There is a satelite service with dozens of channels, but I dont subscribe. (likely I’m the only 30 something upper middle class whiteman in Namibia without DSTV)

I spend my free evenings building puzzles with my 3 year old, reading, and the internet.

Far more rewarding and interesting!!

I couldn’t wait to get off the kindergarten bus to watch Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.
Fred Rogers was such a dear kind man.
The show was local to us.
My dad used to make fun of him saying he was "queer" hahaha
That show and Scooby Doo when I got a bit older were my faves.
I used to watch Dark Shadows with Mom after school too.
And my d!ckhead brother always had control of the TV most of the time so I had to watch stuff he liked, such as the Three Stooges and Speed Racer.
Love…..Jill

Going back as far as my feeble brain will allow…

I used to love the Wooden Tops. I can still do my Spotty Dog impression 😳
Then there was Andy Pandy, The flower pot men, Muffin the Mule (I always thought that was a criminal offense) Four Feather Falls. Then as we grew up a bit the likes of Thunderbirds, Supercar, Fireball XL5, Joe 90 (never liked that one) Captain Scarlet, Robinson Crusoe, and of course John Noakes, Valerie Here’s on I prepared earlier Singleton & Christopher Trace, yep Blue Peter had a lot to answer for, not so good today though!

I must say at this point in my life….We never ad it so good! My childhood was just great! :lol1: 😎

Champion the wonder horse now that was brilliant too!

Why was there so many horse related programs?

Found the intro for Follyfoot
$this->auto_embed_video(‘http://www.youtube.com/v/WVgyxhe849k?version=3&hl=en_US’, ‘560’, ‘340’)

six million dollar man
$this->auto_embed_video(‘http://www.youtube.com/v/HofoK_QQxGc?version=3&hl=en_US’, ‘560’, ‘340’)

snowy white horses, – just found that was ‘the white horses’ which I dont actually remember, just the theme, the musi was so good on these old programs.

Phil, Double deckers, not Banana splits? maybe tiswas?

And of course all the rich kids had those new fangled games consoles where you could play tennis with all the reality of the real thing two bats a ball, blip, blip, pong, riveting!

Dont know what it is though about the splits but brings back such strong and powerful memories and have never forgotten the program or the feelings it brings.

to embed a youtube video, just do the following.

Copy & paste the video address into the message box.

add the code shown below to the start and end of the address. NO spaces

your address will now look something like this… NO SPACES

this only works with youtube.com not any other youtube extension.

LOL, Warren,

Maya the Bee was in the Afrikaans Weekly "Die Huisgenoot" as wel….. I loved it! I think I wanted to be a bee at one stage 😮

Liewe Heksie…. It looses something in translation. Dear Witch?? Loveable Witch?? I still have books and LP’s with Liewe Heksie stories. Sadly, my kiddo only gets to read the books, since record players are another thing of the past.

And do you remember "Wielie Walie"?? Old SABC programmes, which I was shocked to see the private preschool my child attends, still shows episodes of Wielie Walie recorded in the early 80’s…

Eh, and later on: Airwolf, Night Rider, McGuyver, Man van Staal (I think that was called the 6 million dollar man before translation.)

I want to be 10 years old again. I still dig The A-Team underwear 🙄

oh yeah, same childhood dude, what was the other one with the bike? you listed all the ones I could think (car, helicopter, trucks) just can’t remember the name of the bike one?

and who doesn’t know Wielie Walie :lol1:

yes the "Man Van Staal" was the 6 million dollar man but only in Afrikaans. You know the more I think about it I must admit there was not only apartheid against the black man but why was there so few English programs on TV? Doesn’t that qualify me for a top paid job while having to do nothing under the new "reverse" apartheid laws 🙄 :lol1:

Warren,

You’ve got me stumped. I know the story. Black bike with all manner of guns and rockets…I’ll remember if I dont try to remember….

The other story I loved was called "BJ and the Bear" – dude with 18 wheeler truck with a chimp as companion. 😕

Airwolf,

Did you know that the Airwolf helicopter was bought by a SA millionaire. He was flying it around SA. I saw it when it came to Checkers in Table View. Got some great photos of it real close up. I believe he was slapped with a court order not to use the Airwolf branding and he had to change all his advertising and logos. Can’t remember what was the name he had to change it to.

some good stuff there Nigel, the saturday morning stuff was great too, some already mentioned such as terrahawks, chorlton and the wheelies, bonanza, little house on the prairie, zorro, lone ranger, etc,

Dave, I have the whole of the Ulysses 31 series on dvd, bought it for the kids about 6yrs ago 😉 terrahawks, transformers, thundercats and he-man were also ‘run home from school’ favourites, remember dogtanion and the muskahounds? lol! superb stuff! that kind of animation was so new back then, groundbreaking, it’ss all the same now and i can’t stand it!

battle of the planets is vague to me, not sure if i didn’t;t watch it or if it was outside my tv golden years,

another superb one was the mysterious cities of gold, used to race home for that one! i think that’s on dvd too now.

in my opinion you can’t beat all the old tom n jerry, speedy gonzales, roadrunner n coyote type cartoons, the early jap aninmation was great but once it got to the pokemon era it was finished in my eyes, it’s all far too violent and gimmicky now, not innocent violence like tom n jerry but more like it should come with a rating!

I was in the rugby club house last sunday and the young kids and my daughter were sat watching a run of a load of tom n jerry, foghorn leghorn, etc on the screen, i’d only come on for a coffee but was caught by my team mate sitting with the kids and laughing my bits off! 😳 but sooo funny, the kids all loved it.

i’m struggling to recall the names of two I used to watch, one was a sat am series, a large city under the ocean, on the sea bed in a huge glass bubble thing, was cool, a big ‘spaceship’ thing was built which finished the series as it smashed it’s way out! the other is… remembered, ‘the wonder years’ i think, american show about growing up etc, although i was the older brother it rang so true! still see it now and then on the rubbish channels around sky!

HUgh

ps, have loads of tv themes on my mp3 list…..

John, when we had redifusion, a few pounds a week was a wage! I think we had a slot meter on the back of our tele,
early version of pay per view I suppose, but it was a tanner or a shilling in the slot for an evenings viewing, if I recall.
The money always ran out just before the climax of corrie, or the end of a film…
