All for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Many months ago I posted a thread https://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.php?p=210316&highlight=gosh#210316 asking for help to brighten up the new ward for chidren undergoing cancer treatment. I was overwhelmed by the response at the time, however the project at GOSH fell behind due to construction over runs and squables about the cleanliness and longevity of vinyl etc. etc.

Anyhoo….the plans have been finalised and there is a collection of graphics at http://www.3-e.co.uk/gosh (hope the mods allow this link as it saves uploading some huge files here).

I have included some info on this one off page and would like to thank everyone in advance for 1. taking the time to look and 2. if possible help out in any way you can.

All that is required is print and cut, they have someone on site to do the app tape and fitting.

Oh did i mention the main dead line……..14th of Jan oooops, but Im sure they will welcome submissions after this date.

I think I offered 10m X 1340 (a few more meters wouldnt hurt though)of print or print and cut at the time
offer is still there, just let me know which which ones i should do (do they need laminating, (Maybe better for cleaning) and the sizes, maybe better if you allocate as people offer.

Lets all go for it, as a joint venture, see how many volunteers, then split the work up as needed, based on the offers made. and donate as a group.

All of the files I have put on the linked site are 1:1 The page size is large and will need shifting about to minimise on waste and allow the prints to fit on the media.

Im not a digital printer and would judge by the violent chemicals used for cleaning these days, laminating is a must.

Poss best way forward is to pick a graphic and tell me what you are doing, and I will quickly update the page with "offer taken" once all of the graphics are under offer, anything else is a bonus………..

    Thanks again

    Graeme,
I’d like to contribute to the job. My printer will only print up to about 730mm – unlike the Peter Normington monster. I’ve just looked at some trees in the second group and they would have to be tiled if I printed them, is that acceptable or should I look for something that I can print in one hit?

Yes, they want to minimise on the vinyl, while maximising on impact. I will try an get a picture of the finished article. Much of what I have uploaded is pieces to a large mural (some look wierd i.e. half a tree!!) and quite a bit of imagination is needed to put it all together………

Ill get an answer for you Steve, but Im guessing that should be OK……their main fear was multi-layered vinyl (creating ‘dust shelves’….barking mad i know), however tiled would remain a single thickness……….

Ok, just looked at a few more.
It looks like I can do the first item – the collection of animals and I’ll do the clouds and mountains, which look to me like they can be done from ordinary vinyl ie; white and ivory or cream.

Thanks for the offer, the graphics can be shuffled round to fit on your media as they will be cut out. A parcel from Oz would be an excellent addition as they have said they will apply to other areas, they only need the first complete set to do the murals. Anything else is a bonus.

    Good question Jason,
we also need to get a bit more info before printing, so we can be consistant with each other, especially if the finished results are being assembled in the same place.
Print resolution and materials, matt or gloss etc.

I don’t think the colours is a big factor. Like Peter said its using the same material ie gloss or matt and same laminates. If a Rhino is a different shade to another Rhino I don’t think that would impact the whole mural greatly. But if you got different reflections of each animal then I think it would.

I only have gloss overlaminate here and I’ve nearly finished playing with the files to start cutting all the animals in the ‘animal collection’ I printed a giraffe on the 360 x 720 standard setting (SL7.1 on a VersaCam) and that looked quite nice but would obviously be improved if I went up a setting.
My intention was to cut the clouds and the mountains from white and ivory vinyl, probably Oracle 751.
This is a bit trickey isn’t it, if the VersaCamms are all printing on the same setting with the same software, inks etc then they should all be the same but we haven’t all got the same machines, software, ink, vinyl settings so there is surely going to be some variations.

    Steve

P.S. When the sign exhibition comes around later this year, how about all those that are going, who run printers, print a common file and take it along to compare – could be very interesting. Can you imagine the hours of discussion!

    Hey Steve,

Two identical setups will produce slightly varying results. That’s why if you want to profile properly you create profiles for each individual machine. The manufacturer profiles provide a great starting point. From what I’ve read into profile creation this is what they recommend to have consistent colours between all the machines in your shop.

Steve, Many thanks and well done on the work done so far. Continuity of colour is not going to be important when you are supplying a complete set, as to the finish, everyone so far is going glossy and as Jason said this is the important part.

And many thanks to everyone else how has taken this project to their hearts…Im looking at a small bill for the excess in traffic on my site this month, so keep up the viewing as Im happy to pay……….
    😛 😛
Been trying to contact the Project coordinator this morning to no avail, could quite possibly be in another hospital giving birth!!!

I printed the set of giraffes at the same setting as Steve M. (720 x 360) and they are fine.
Steve, were you able to just drop the files into signlab ok?
I didnt get the full image, only the stuff cropped to the artboard/page.
and signlab seemed to get a bit slow when re-aranging the elements to fit so I printed direct from illustrator.

I have split the file into two smaller files (a1 and a2) these are saved as eps and all have a small outline (1mm) in orange which is the colour I have set my troop rip up to recognise as the contour. Obviously anyone using these can click on each contour and change it to a different colour of their choice for their own setup.

    Peter,
I just did a file>import, which worked well enough, but all very slow as you say, is that because there are so many little elements in each image?. I worked on just the larger images to apply the contour cut, I left a 2mm white border all round (rounded corner setting)because some of the detail in the tails, eyes etc; will leave little spikey bits around the edges which will get picked up later if they are cleaned. The other sizes are all reductions of those. It has printed ok from SL which is just as well because I don’t have anything else.

    Lorraine,
Yes no problem I haven’t cut anything yet. I was going to use Oracle 018 Light Ivory for the mountains – mainly because I’ve got some. If you haven’t got the shade, or anything close I could always overnight you my roll (10m x 610mm). Let me know

fantastic progress so far and Im just amazed at all the kind offers and the rapid rate at which printing is taking place.

Following a request from Lorraine yes they will accept plain cut vinyl along the lines of animal poems etc, laid out in spirals, paragraphs and wavy lines. Attached is something I did for Morgadies room (I know there are a couple of overlaps on characters), but things along this line will always be found a home at the hospital.

I just had a call from the lady at GOSH, and looks like I misunderstood 🙁 the graphics are going onto a coloured background so need to be cut out with a zero contour or bleed,
I did the giraffes, and because they only just fitted on my media was unable to fit the reg marks to contour cut them.
Unfortunately, they are unable to cut the graphics by hand so I will either have to get them sent back to cut them out by hand, or redo them at a slightly smaller size.
Just thought I would let others know, in case any one else makes the same mistake 😳

    Peter,

Got the call from Victoria ref the giraffes, and she had miss-understood the process of producing printed vinyl. She sent the following to me:

We’ve had more designs come through today which are all pre cut and we’ve been able to start putting some up – they look absolutely great, have attached some for you to get an idea of how this will look – it really will transform the whole space!

Everyone has been so kind and we’ve even had further offers of FOC/discounted work for other areas we are refurbishing which is just amazing and very touching. This really will allow us to transform many other areas which we might not have been able to consider, which is brilliant.

I really can’t thank you enough for leading on this and you really must work with some great companies to offer us so much when they must be very busy

I hope you like the pictures we will of course send more as we get the stuff up.

Many, Many thanks to everyone who contributed. Have got some pics of Roff’s Lions, hopefully more to follow shortly.

    Cheers

    Graeme

Slowly but surely the graphics are going up on the walls. Just had this update from the hospital:

    Dear All

Please find attached some initial images of how the work in Safari Daycare is coming along. I hope that you can see that your support is already helping us to make a difference. We also had some digital wallpaper produced so please find attached image of how this looks too. I have only been in post for two weeks so have picked this project up from Victoria Jones who is now on maternity leave for 9 months and will take it forward to conclusion.

We have yet to install the majority of the graphics and this has been due to a change in personnel and collating all the material together. I am pleased to tell you that on Saturday 8 March (all being well) and when there are no children/young people/visitors or staff present within the department we will install the rest of the vinyls . For those that we can’t manage we will ask an installer to assist us at a later date.

Not rushing the process and having the opportunity to lay everything out and carefully apply the vinyl without having to work round people, equipment and rooms in use will ultimately lead to better results longer term.

I will be in touch with another update as soon as I have it and an article will appear in Roudabout, Great Ormond Street’s Magazine, in March, which I will let you have copies of.

Best wishes and thank you for your continued interest and support.

There will be a copy of the hospital magazine sent out to all those involved in the next 4 weeks or so containing an article on the project.

From Morgandie, Lyndsay and myself, thank you all for four time, effort and provision of some fantastic vinyl.
