  • Cast Aluminium letters – has anyone used these or know of supplier

    Hi All,
Just wondering does anyone have any experience or knowledge about cast aluminium letters?

If so what are pros & cons for them? Limitations on size shape etc.?

I have a job to quote for & think they may possibly fit the bill. There is a variety of letter size required from 750mm height with 40mm stroke to same height with 135mm stroke. Also a logo which is approx 1000 x 1600mm.
It all needs to be 3D but flush mounted & I think that cast aluminium could give a bit more depth than just flat cut sheet aluminium. All need to be colour matched to a pantone ref if possible.

Which finish would be more durable, paint or powder coating?

Some of the lettering will be at below eye level outdoors so needs to be able to withstand the odd bystander potentially leaning against them along with the usual weather battering. This is the main reason I’m thinking of cast as opposed to built up, along with the impression I’ve got that it may be a more economical option? (probably incorrect!!)

Wards Of Bristol ( http://www.ward-signs.co.uk/product/lettering/ ) would be the kiddies you want here although not sure they would be cheaper than built ups. However, if you want a "prism" 3d effect then they may well be. (If yours is a size and style they have a mould for!).

Hope that may (but possibly may not!) help…..

Thanks for the link Andy, I’ll give them a shout.
They will actually all be flat faced not prismatic & it’s a brand logo & lettering so has to be a specific font in different weights. It would definitely be a custom job & not off the shelf but I’ll give them a bell anyway.

I may well end up going with built up yet, but had stumbled across cast aluminium & it seems on the face of it to be a good alternative option until I find out otherwise.

You could always just rout out of some 10, 20 or 25mm thick acrylic to give you the depth without building up? We do this quite a bit and paint with a two pack (car type paint). Can work out more expensive than built ups if a large piece (due to the cost of the thick acrylic) but on small letters works well. Just another idea to throw in to the mix…. 😆

I think these would class as large pieces wouldn’t they at 740mm height?

Possibly, depends if you can "nest" any smaller letters within the logo to save on material?

Out of interest what size are the acrylic sheets you use? I can do a quick nest here to get a rough idea of how many sheets might be required.

Hi Myles, usually 3000x1000mm or 2030x1350mm.

With true shape nesting in Flexi I managed to get it all into 2 full sheets & just over half a third sheet of 2030x1350mm
    with 10mm spacing.

Hi Myles, unfortunately the rules state that I cannot recommend my companies services so all I can recommend is that you find someone who can rout these for you, affix studs into the rear for flush wall mounting and can get painted with a two pack low bake (as per car repairs) paint to your pantone colour. (which is what we would do)
