You can coat it in paint, lacquer, varnish etc. because we have had customers do just that. ie. they sprayed it with clear coat of "something". i have read others having done same too so i doubt you will have much issues.
however, i think the ingredient of whatever you put over it "might" come into play due to a chemical reaction. easy solution is do some test mate.
i don’t know what you will be rubbing it down with after the first coat but guessing it will just be something like a flattening paper?

As Rob has said you can apply lots of paint finishes over vinyl.
First off I would suggest that you use the thinnest cast material you can get and then take it to a body shop and get it 2 pack laqueur coated but even with that kind of finish which can be loaded up, in my experience, you’ll never completely loose the the edges of the vinyl. Test it first.

    Hi Tim,

Like Steve says lacquer is the one to go for, standard varnishes are not ‘clear’. Definitely go for a cast vinyl as this sounds like the customer wants it around for a while, a calendered vinyl will have a percentage of shrinkage over time, this will split the lacquer.
