can you use reflective vinyl on a shop sign?
Posted by Warren Beard on February 6, 2007 at 4:05 pmHi Guys
A customer has requested a white sign with red reflective text for his shop fascia. I have never seen a shop sign like this and I’m sure there is a good reason for it. It is in a market area so not much light and no car lights will hit it either.
For these reasons I would presume reflective is a waste?
Right or wrong?
(cheapo shop keeper wants a illuminated sign but not have to pay for one and thinks reflective vinyl will "glow" at night when the lights are on 😮 )
Thanks
Warren

You’re absolutely right Warren.
Try to educate him. He is probably getting reflective mixed up with fluorescent.
If insists, then just do it. But get paid up front.

yeah, sounds like he’s getting mixed up with flourescent like John said.
Show him samples of both types and let him choose but make him aware of your concerns if he insists on reflective -
Thanks John & Marcela
I thought that would be right. He did not want flourescent but wanted reflective to "reflect light" but there is no light to reflect. I will just have to show him a sample and he will understand it is a waste of money.
Thanks again

But is there any rules about not using on shop signs??? I THINK IT WOULD LOOK NICE AS A EDGE STROKE TO MAIN LETTERS AND WOULDN’T MIND TOYING WITH THE IDEA. I LIKE THE IDEA THAT IT NOT REFLECTS UNLESS CAR LIGHTS SHINE ON IT. JUST SOMETHING I WANT TO PLAY WITH NOT NEEDED BUT ARE THERE RULES THAT GOVERN THIS, LIKE HIGHWAY POLICY. IM GUESSING YES???? WITH THE ADVANCE IN REALLY BRIGHT LED SIGNS EDGE LIT ETC I WONDER IF IT WOULD BE OK?

Yes, a very old thread!
Did these ones years ago.

It does work in low light conditions but ONLY shines back in the direction of the light source. OK for car lights passing but absolutely no use otherwise.

MY CLIENT HAS THE WORD ‘GLOW’ IN HER SHOP SIGN AND WANTS TO EMPHASISE THIS WITHOUT THE COST OF LED’S. OBVIOUSLY I CAN EPHASISE IN THE DESIGN ASPECT WHICH I HAVE, BUT SHE SPECIFICALLY ASKED ME ABOUT THIS AND THOUGHT TO MYSELF I WONDER IF ITS EVEN ALLOWED??

I actually quite like the effect. I agree with you that its little effect only on direct contact with light which i explained to the client.. -
You will only get some sort of effect when lights shinning straight at it & then you need to be stood in the right spot to see it so I would show the customer some sort of example before you go ahead or they may be very disappointed with the job. Fluorescent might work better but the problem would be it lasting, don’t know of anyone doing a film that lasts more than a couple of years
