Can you dome on carbon fiber?
Posted by Warren Beard on February 4, 2011 at 1:16 pmHave an enquiry and wasn’t 100% sure it would work due to edges and the texture?
anybody tried it?
cheers

oops, that’s no good. So printed carbon fiber effect is better?

Warren,
Should come out fine. Gel-coating (doming is the same I assume) merely will "gloss" whatever its applied to. It wont change the color or pattern. So in Chris’s case, he domed a textured material but finished product is a gloss black. If you dome even dry carbon fiber, the finish will be gloss carbon fiber. Unless, of course, you add a flattener to the gel to achieve a matte or satin finish.
Hope i understood this right.
What was the request for, just out of curiosity?

I’m with Chris, doming the textured carbon fibre will just give you a sheet of "flat" gloss black vinyl, it wont have the pattern of the carbon at all. I’ve tried it with 3M and with APA’s – I think the polyurethane just throws the light around differently so all the peaks and troughs disappear.
If you can come up with a good print effect one I wouldn’t mind a copy of the file as I’ve tried and struggled to get a one.

thanks andy glad somebody else was mad enough to try it.
when i thought about it after, the 3m stuff is one colour its the texture that creates the look cover fill the texture in and the effect is gone.
i will send you a file.

quote Andy Blackett:I’ve tried it with 3M and with APA’s – I think the polyurethane just throws the light around differently so all the peaks and troughs disappear.
Duh, didn’t occur to me we were talking about actual sheets of carbon fiber. My fault. That is still interesting how it turns it "flat" black though, filling it all in.
Anyone have Hexis’ CF film?? I could get an A4 of it if you want to try out? Is that enough for testing? (i dont know anything about doming)
