  • Can you cut magnetic vinyl with plotter?

Posted by Chris Walker on May 14, 2010 at 7:29 pm

Hi all, I’m using Graphtec CE5000-60 and was wondering if you can cut magnetic vinyl on it or will I just end up with the expense of a new blade and some scored vinyl?

    Cheers, Chris.

With several passes you could…………but you will need a new blade afterwards and if you do it often enough you will more than likely wreck the head carriage way before it would normally need replacing.

Forgot to add, I would opt for a 60 degree blade to do this type of work.

I have done it before. Just need to careful as the extra weight of the mag material can cause it to slip, causing problems.
You really only want to score the material, not try to cut through it.
Once cut, ‘break’ it out by hand and clean up edge with a craft knife.
Well thats how I do it! 🙂 others may give different methods

Cheers, Nigel, do you think it would be the case for a one-off, or is it not worth risking?
Not really important enough to wreck a blade or indeed a plotter 😛

As Jason pointed out, you should be looking to score the material rather than cut, several passes means you don’t have to go with too much pressure and so less stress to the head carriage. As a one off or doing it now and then shouldn’t be too much of a problem, you just need to start the pressure off light because you want the blade to slice through rather than cut and maybe ‘dig in’, hence a 60 degree blade.

Cheers Jason, I typed last response before seeing yours 😳
I might give it a go the way you suggested, it is only two oval shapes.
I’m not sure which blade I have, I only have the one that came with it looks more like a 45 degree angle….?

    dont even try it.
Graphtecs have a ferrous bed, so what do magnets do?
it is not even possible on a machine that has a ally bed,
just cut your vinyl as a template, and get the scissors out
    Peter

Ps, I am talking vehicle grade mags @.85
if you are doing thinner stuff, then it is possible,
but not worth a risk for a couple of ovals

Stick the ovals on the mag and cut out with scissors

Did this myself yesterday using "stencil" font and cut the letters Fully Amped.

Did about 5 passes, pushed out the mag material…Job done!

Don’t try and rush it, What I did as well was to put some cheap left over laminate (or vinyl) on the mag side to help it run though, cut the white area and hey Bisto easy mag.

I’m sorry but even if if it succeeds a couple of times, I wouldn’t risk the plotter doing something it just isn’t designed for.

I use the printable mag and die cut it too. As Lee says, takes a few cuts, not sure how you’d do it on a vinyl cutter though without registration marks to know where to start from each run.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I’ll just use the scissors method for this one as it is quite a simple shape: It is also quite heavy stuff.
(tbh I really should have though of that first 😳 )
