    Hi Noel

Handovers in London N1 do a range of air brushes and compressors and they also have air brush books and I believe possibly videos on it.

There are some experts on the board like Alan and Terry who might be able to advice on equipment

    John

P.s. Handovers will be moving shortly but still in the London area

They are presently at 37H Mildmay Grove North, London N1 4RH

Noel type in “Airbrushing” in the “Search the boards” section, you should come up with quite a few pages.

    Hi Noel,

grap an airbrush as quick as you can, they are great, track down ‘createx autoair’ from createxuk its really good stuff.

practice makes perfect, once you get the hang of it you wont look back.

if you come down to brixton anytime look me up i’ll show you some tips

Just in answer to your question Noel

A mah’lstick is a simple rod padded at the end to lean on the substrate.
It is used to steady the signwriter’s hand when he is making clean strokes with his brushes.

mah’lstick: Dutch; malen = paint, stok = stick

I have Iwata Custom Micron and Iwata Eclipse airbrushes, bought them direct from http://www.bearair.com

I have the full range of createx autoair here but find you spend more time cleaning the airbrush than using it, it dries so fast, thats the downside with fast drying waterbased paints.

I have a Standox carpaint carousel here and think that shooting basecoat is much more productive, but then you have to have the right enviroment.

I also have alot of Deka Signair here but that was causing similar problems to Createx, although Createx have a great colour range, try some and see how you get on.

I also at the moment have Iwata HP-C, HP-B, two each and two Paasche VL’s Millenium and a standard one a Badger 150 with three needle sizes and a Devilbiss Super 63 Sprite major. If you want to see the results that can be achieve take a peek here https://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=4375

Good luck and you will need a lot of patience to start with. I found that using cellulose auto car paints easiest to start with (just the cans) but havent used them in a while it seems to be all acrylic and mettalic ones now and have yet to try these but will be doing in the near future.

Good luck and as said before practice and control is all its about.

    Gordon.

Clearing vinyl can be done with Frogjuice, not sure who sells it in the uk, or you can use One Shots 4005 speed dry uv clear which is very similar (if not same) to FJ. Handovers have all One Shot products, you can also use the 4005 as a vinyl primer before painting, if needs be.

Noel, I’ve done young Mr Millichamps weekend airbrushing course, very good weekend, Pete and Neil are good blokes and i learnt loads. Although I would say wait till the spring as Gt. Yarmouth is bloody cold this time of year. 😀

You can get Frogjuice (clear and colours) from Victory – 01246 570570. Works well on vinyl but you have to let it harden off for quite a while before handling too much.

hi noel, your best bet is to use one shot sign paint thinned down with one shot reducer, paint your lettering logo etc once you get the hang of the brush & spray wet on wet, dont worrie about the overspray it wipes of with pannel wipe in a snip(available from any car body shop), any way we know your going to paint a big thick juicy bevell round the lettering & put a nice pannel in the back…… best place for your sign kit, brushes & ready made “maul stick” is wrights of lymm IN LYMM! Cheshire. Airbrush, the best brush on the market is the badger cresendo, you can put out thru it & it dont jam, if it dose just turn the pressure up to about 80psi put your fingers over the end pres the triger…… a little messey, but dose the trick, dont spray at 35psi blast it out at 50/60psi, its a duel action brush so you can set your own pressure, you will find as you use it you can also controll very well with in & out movements to the substrate your working on, any help tricks or advice feel free to get in touch, all the best Pete from signtheme
