  • can signlab files be opened in flexisign?

Posted by andy reynolds on August 19, 2006 at 7:29 pm

I’m having trouble with sign labs and flexi. I need to know how to open a sign labs file with flexi expert. Can it be done? Do I need to do something else to get flexi to open it? Flexi just won’t import the file, and I need to use flexi to alter it because what I want to do, sign labs won’t do! Unless I’ve totally overlooked something – I need to save the file as a bitmap to e-mail it and as far as I can tell, sign labs can’t (or won’t!) do it.

Someone tell me I’m wrong and there really is an easy way……… 😕

Export it as Illustrator from Signlab, then import into flexi

In Signlab you can use the transform menu to render to bitmap – then save it as a bitmap image. 😀

or in the FILE menu – "EXPORT IMAGE" – same thing (just less control over the resolution)

Judging by the replies it seems no-one here understands the difference between raster and vector. What a joke!

I think you misunderstood the original question.

Andy was asking how to open a signlab file in flexisign in order that he could then go on to convert it to a bitmap using flexisign.

Phill Kneale answered his question most helpfully.

I attempted to help out further by explaining how a bmp file could be created directly from signlab without having to use flexi sign.

David helpfully explained another method by which a bmp file could be created directly from signlab.

Naturally I, and I am sure David and Phil know very well the differences between a vector drawn image and a rendered image. We wouldn’t survive very long in the sign trade if we didn’t know the difference now would we 😛

Can you export it from SL as EPS or AI then import it into Flexi?

Maybe you don’t have all of the filters enabled.

Go to FILE, EXPORT and click the FILTER tab (bottom left), select every option – then try saving it out as an AI or EPS – that will maintain the units correctly. ie. if you’re both working in millimetres you’ll be fine.

If you just have a ‘designers’ version of Signlab you’re probably stuffed as you can’t export – just save as signlab files.

ps. never seen an *.IPF file extension before. What is it?

Yes, would be totally exportable in loads of different formats.

In ‘a previous life’ I was handed the designer’s version of Signlab and the main company kept the full blown e6 (cheapskates) – was worse than useless so never used it and kept the V5.7 I had been using.

There is NO way to circumvent the export ban, no cut & paste, no nothing to get it to work in a lower version of SL or another program.

This works on design only Omega so might work SL…print the file to Acrobat Distiller with the graphic "edge filled" (if you don’t have a Adobe Acrobat search Google for PDF factory for free down load) and then import the resulting PDF file into your full working software.

    see how you get on

oh same as armourfend!!!! You should have said! It CANNOT be converted to another format, this is to ensure that you have to use the manufacturers templates.

    Sorry!

this is an impasse i am at as well.

venturetape’s ventureshield program gives you an "invisible patterns" branded version of signlab 7.1, which requires the use of a usb dongle and cut codes from the supplier to operate the machinery.

i have installed simultaneously signlab 7.1 and the IP7.1. i can cut freely (not for the purpose of scamming the supplier, but for the purpose of cutting other vinyl and clear product not affiliated with the supplier) with signlab and metered with IP. IP will load any cdl/eps/etc much like signlab, however the .IPF files provided with IP are somehow restricted in signlab. IP will not allow any export, convert, resave, or any other means of retrieving the pattern. with an instance of each open, i’m not even able to copy&paste between them.

my last ditch effort is to "print" the pattern via a generic postscript printer which prints to a local file. after fuddling with the "printer" options, i have landed on EPS2 but there are many print options i’m not understanding.

i have successfully printed an eps from IP and loaded in signlab, however i’m only getting the text labels and no patterns.

does anybody have any experience with this method? i fear this is my only (if any) chance to complete this operation.

thanks in advance, and i hope andy you might get somewhere with this
