  • can i put my keyboard in the dishwasher?

Some may remember a few months ago i spilled some Budweiser all over the top of a new keyboard i had. The keyboard was not the cheapest at around £80 or so..s as you can imagine i was pretty annoyed as i have done this a good few times while browsing the net and having a beer. 😳
anyway, i posted this here on the boards and someone found a thread on some website about there being a myth that if you put your keyboard in the dishwasher it fixed it.
    well….

after the spill, my keyboard was well and truly knackered. almost every key simply jammed down and wouldn’t come up. the face was all sticky and unusable.
so the next day i went and bought a new one from PC-world.
when i got back i stuck the old one (on its own) into my dishwasher (without soap/washing powder) once done i turned the machine back to the start and let it do the full cycle again.
once complete i removed the keyboard, gave it a good shake dry and left it on its side to drain and dry for 4-5 days. Audrey stuck it in a cupboard soon after and i forgot about it.
just recently i had a niggling glitch my my new keyboard and hadn’t time to mess about working out what was wrong. into the cupboard i went, took out the washed keyboard, stuck in some batteries and it instantly auto-detected the settings from the other board and i began typing 100% sticky or glitch free. i am actually typing this on the same washed keyboard. :lol1:

anyway, just thought ide share the tip that i got from the boards and it worked! so next time you saturate your keyboard in sticky coke, beer, coffee etc pop it in the dishwasher 😉

I haven’t got a dishwasher – would it work in a washing machine and should I avoid the spin dry cycle 😕

    That’ll be fine Phill.

But don’t try to shorten the process by drying it in the microwave.

Try to avoid pegging out on a washing line by the cord as the strain may pull the delicate wires out, thus undoing the good work done by washing. Additionally if you add a teaspoon full of olive oil to the wash, the keys will be self lubricating………..

    i swear it works a treat! 😀

the way i looked at it was, my keyboard was knackered so i had nothing to losse, but it now works perfect. i now have two so i have one as backup the next time i put on a full cycle boyle wash. 😀

well i thought i wouldn’t do it but just had a cup of coffee over the key board.

so put it under the tap (soft water here) for a couple of mins, now out side drying.
    we will see

It depends. The keyboard innards vary according to manufacturer. Last autumn, I figured my keyboard would be okay after a bit of cleaning. However, I popped the keyboard open to discover that the exposed membrane contacts had corroded. Liquid must have gotten in there at an earlier point, and the keyboard turned out to be a loss.

chris i think its the boil wash that rids the sticky liquid from the keys. then again i guess it hasnt dried by the time you rinsed it. make sure you give it plenty time to dry out.

rod i guess your right there too mate…. the one i was using was a logitec wireless type. i kinda thought all modern type keyboards would be much the same.

sinse posting this i have found out it was "Martin" that let me in on this process. cheers mate… 😉
