  • Can I cover a cistern outlet?

Posted by John Singh on November 19, 2009 at 7:29 pm

To put a sign central above a doorway would mean it would have to go over a cistern outlet which protrudes no more than about half inch (12mm) from the wall

The customer has asked for this to be done although I’ve suggested keeping it away from the outlet

Just wondered if there were ‘no’ no’s in putting it over the outlet if I left enough room behind the sign?

What do you mean by cistern John? is it just an overflow? shouldn’t be a problem as long as you leave a few mm they are after all only in use if there is a problem?

Its just an overflow pipe from the toilet cistern

If the pipe only protrudes 12mm (ish) from the brickwork then it has already been cut or broken at some time John. Long as it can still allow water out if the cistern overflows then there shouldn’t be to much of a problem. I would imagine if they ever needed to get at the outside of the pipe then the sign could be removed.

A sheet of plywood would bring the sign flush with the outlet and make it a little bit less noticeable.
