Is that a standard lead that comes with a new monitor?

Yes Lee that’s all you need, most laptops can run 2 monitors.
I mean its own screen and one more.

Depends how old or new your laptop is. It most likely will have a 15pin VGA out but it could have a DVI digital out.
If you buy a new monitor it may come with the lead with it, and again, it could come with either interface or both 😀

im not the one to ask but do you not need a powerful graphics card to run two monitors? a bit like dual monitors or will the laptop one autoswitch off when the large one is connected?
-
Rob, the laptop will run as 2 monitors or just the 2nd one, well that’s how mine work any way.

Robert. no you don’t need a powerful graphics card if you are just viewing on 2 monitors.
Some laptops will automatically switch their own monitor off when an external monitor is plugged in and some you can toggle between the two using something like F4 or F5 keys.
