  • can i attach alupanel to acrylic?

Hi, i’m building a quote for a local shop to supply and fit a alupanel facia sign, aprx 20ft long x 2ft deep (in 8ft sections), i was thinking of using a double sided tape as i’ve heard it mentioned here before, aswell as a small self tapper to each corner for extra security,

the alupanel will be going over an existing acrylic ? (plastic of some kind) facia,

    i’m looking at using hi-bond 25mm double sided (about £25 a 50m roll),

will this be suitable ? if not, what would you use ?

i prob shouldnt say too much cos i dont know who the other sign co now being asked to quote is, or even if they’re on here, but to be honest i’m not that bothered anymore, this job has been a bit of a PITA ! initially i suggested covering the whole facia rather than just the vandalised area, but they just wanted the small area sorted,
so rather than mess about with just lettering, i spent ages getting the design as i thought it should be, basically adding a new sign over the whole area, a lighter green contoured border with a matching green inner, essentially making it look like a deliberate part of the sign, rather than a poor attempt to repair/cover the bad area with just the missing logo’s / lettering.

now after all that they want to go with my original idea, and have now also brought in another sign co to quote, fair enuf i guess !

i dont expect to get the job to be honest, now they’ve involved the original sign Co aswell, i don’t think i’ll be competitive as i have to redraw all the company logo’s etc where-as they’d already have it on file, so i’ve priced accordingly now to make it a job worth having if i get it !

oh well, be a profitable job if i’m successful !

it’ll be interesting to see what they do if i dont get it.

    Hugh,

    Dump the 8×4’s

A 10 x 5 sheet will do the fascia with one join in the middle. What you covering up? If it’s a panatrim machine a flap 25- 30mm wide on the back of the dibond on three sides- 45 degree router bit and a cheap hand router- go down to the back of the ali face and bingo- bend up the edges and fix with glue.

This will give you a nice light set of panels which you can just lift up and clip over the existing trim and fix down with some self tappers. You can even fit this on your own.

If you are looking at 2ft depth a standard sheet of dibond 10 x 5 will give you the entire fascia from a single piece- plenty for the extra bends too.

If you are up against someone else on this job this will be how they work it as it’s the cheapest way to do it.

If, you aren’t to keen on routing then cut the panel to side and pop rivet it onto the face of the trim- countersink the rivets a little. Use a bit of the offcut to knock up some “beading”- 20mm deep strips that you then fit over the rivet heads with a bit of tessa tape. This will also look neat.

You can do all your cutting with a sharp jack saw- a small plane is handy to deburr the edges.

Not a very difficult project and it’s well within your capabilities- good luck 🙂

thankyou Andy, i was probably gonna ordera 10×5 but allowed enough money for two ! the rivet idea is better,

i’ve not had a proper look at the existing facia other than from the ground, and only the area i was originally gonna cover, i’m sure it’s just plastic of some kind, but it goes right up to an overhanging section of the building, a 90degree lip might squeese in though, good idea ! if i out one top and bottom it’ll finish it nicely, hmmm, you’ve got me thinking now, thanks !

i don’t have a router any more, so that’s out for now, i don’t yet know if can get the alupanel in the correct colour, if not, i’ll flood coat it, so the joins can then be hidden, like you say, with a strip of vinyl that will also cover the rivet heads,

i’m probably not going about this job in the right manner, i don’t think they will go with me anyways, just an impression i get, i’ve dealt with customers of all types throughout my life and reckon i know when i’m onto a dud ! they only mentioned about the additional quote after i phoned them to get conformation of reciept of the original quote, so i spent little time on working it out, i just looked at the prices in the catalogue, doubled everything, and added a big ‘ goodwill bonus’ on their behalf for the trouble i’ve been put too ! i kind of dont really want the job now, but if i do get it, it will be worth my while at least 😀

on another note, i’ve just been given verbal confirmation of my biggest order to date, four figures no less ! and to top it off, i’ve only gotta climb up some scaffolding and drill a dozen holes as everything is having to be outsourced, well chuffed, now one of those a week and i’d be a happy bunny !
