can i apply vinyl to an inside painted wall?
Posted by George Elsmore on November 2, 2006 at 11:00 amhello all, has anyone ever applied vinyl to a rendered brick wall (interior) the rendered and paint finish is immaculate so i thought applying vinyl to it would be a doddle and it was but 2 days late it is starting to curl up atedges…. its digi printed & cut vinyl and its the dark colours that are misbehaving the prints were allowed to gas out etc before the cutting….does anyone have a clue we have been back and give it a good heating and rollering any reasons please??????

Could be the paint used. Had this problem myself and found they had used a cheap paint. Got them to repaint with a decent make and then there was no problem.

Cheers Dave i dont think they will repaint a library though 🙄

If the brick work was sealed before the rendering went on, moisture can only go one way and that is back out through the face of the render…which will cause the adhesive on your print to fail.
This might sound a bit odd but for some reason (not sure why) monomeric vinyl seems to work on emulsioned paint work, something along the lines of the matt Avery 500 with semi-permanent adhesive should do the trick (just make sure your profiles work for this vinyl).
Why not try an unprinted test sample for a couple of weeks before going to the expense of a reprint. (at least your customer see’s that you are making an effort to resolve the problem).

I did a job a few years ago with text onto some boards roller painted with silk vinyl emulsion, I used some very cheap matt vinyl.
About three weeks after the boards had been put up the lettering was peeling off as if it no adhesive on it at all. I think that the paint might have affected the adhesive , similar to PVC banner material, and also that the finish, although looking quite smooth, was sufficiently rough that the vinyl only stuck to the top of the ‘miniature mountains’

Just a thaught… could it be that the nice ‘n smooth paint could be something that is thinned with turpentine or some such? Could be that the solvents in the vinyl adhesive "draws" the oily turps to the surface.v Stranger things have happened!

We have found that if its a non gloss finish the vinyl never sticks.
Even a semi gloss is better.
If they have let it cure for the required days (usually 15 plus) it shouldn’t be the paint.
If its matte finish see if they would seal it or clear coat it yourself maybe?

Paint a coat of watered down PVA on the wall the size of the image, leave to dry for a couple of days………. IT WILL STICK.

PVA is a water based wood glue, you can also use Unibond which is the same sort of thing and is used in the building trade for sealing unstable plaster etc.
