I have been told to use Taut flex air (for airbrushing), but it was really thin and tended to run everywhere. It is designed for airbrushing on vinyl and probably works great, but I gave up and went back to airbrushing on steel with carpaint.

I think the normal Taut flex is really thick and can be painted on quite easily with a brush, but not sprayed.

The guys up the street from me airbrush on truck curtain vinyl all the time with 2pac solids with flex add in it. But 2k is deadly and they have a booth.

Also, Krylon graffitti paint sticks to everything, I have used that straight from the can onto vinyl and banners without problems.

The krylon paint seems to flex really well, but I didn’t weed it after painting. I paintd it after I applied it and used freehand masks, but I only need a loose graffitti look and some gradients.

It shouldn’t crack, but as you are lifting the bits out it might do something crazy. I should also say that before I paint I wipe the surface with prep vinyl or isopropyl alcohol. That seems to help it stick.

Also, as chris said, spray the can into the airbrush cup, gives you alot more control so you can avoid huge amounts of paint coming all of a sudden.

    Hope that helps.

(also, practice/test on something you can afford to destroy because different vinyls may react strangely)

    1. Flat your vinyl sheet with a scotchbright pad.
    2. Design and include a 1mm to 1.5mm border around every thing your going to cut.
    3. Cut design.
    4. Clean vinyl with panel wipe or meths and tac off.
    5. Spray your design with either 1 shot or Autoair colour if using an airbrush. Or you can use, as previously said, aerosol paint.
    6. As soon as you’ve finished spraying weed the the thin outline to prevent paint lift when weeding fully.
    7. Apply frog juice clear lacquer.
    8. Allow to dry and apply appli tape.

    Hope this helps

Createx auto air… best of the lot I’ve tried.

It’s water based so you can use water to thin it.

    Grips vinyl !

You can buy it from hobbycraft stores or direct from createx…..
    just google them

    Cheers

    Neil,
is there a reason why the whole weeding couldn’t be done straight after applying the paint? Ive seen others recommend your method, but cant get my head around the reason to weed twice, I know I must be missing something…….

I was thinking the same Peter…..the only thing I can think of is to remove the mask safely from the edge of the print without running the risk of the bulk of the mask damaging the wet paint

Easier to weed a thin border, stops larger pieces of vinyl accidentally touching the painted vinyl.

Also, if there was no vinyl surrounding your graphic when you apply frog juice it ends up on the release paper causing problems in application of said graphic. Your honour. lol

the best paint I’ve used for vinyl is tanya polycarbonate paint in a little spray tin, sticks better than solvent ink, drys fast and will not fade, excellent stuff no need to lacquer or laminate
