  • can forex be hung indoors in a hot take-away?

Posted by James Martin on March 10, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Can anyone advise if 10mm forex, 6 foot by 1 foot, would be ok hung landscape format from the ceiling of a take-away?

Potential for a fair bit of heat.

No problem, as long as it is hung, and not held, but 5mm composite will cost about the same, so worth considering as an option

??? 5mm ACM about the same price? who does a 5mm ACM sheet apart from for building cladding and why would you need 5mm for an interior application, i know i am at risk of a right dressing down here because Peter its unlike you to be wrong :0) i am always willing to learn.

hung Forex Classic will be fine as it can move with the heat etc and if you need a fire rating , a lighter option would be Forex Smart from a H&S point of view which is a foamed Polystyrene.

    Cheers

Guys when I showed the customer the forex he thought it would warp with the heat.

It knocked me back a bit as I hadn’t even factored that in as, it been all external stuff I’ve been doing.

I just told him I could guarantee it against warping for 3 yrs and then ran home to my laptop to ask the experts.

I dont have my europoint price list to hand, but I have compared 10mm forex in the past to acm, and not a lot off difference, and my apologies, I did type "5" instead of "3" mm ACM which is perfectly adequate for the job
Forex smart would also do the job, but in my opinion is more for temporary stuff, I’m sure Cameron will put me right if its not

    Hi Peter,

I know where you are coming from but its actually good for 2 years UV stability outside although not very robust for exterior work , if its hanging indoors will be fine , just thinking of the weight really. however in these times use every bit of scrap you have.

    All the best

I’d not be using this James, your game giving the warranty.

It would need to be fixed to a solid frame, but I’d be reluctant to put it in an environment that you ‘know’ will be hot.

It would be OK for the very occasional short term heat, but I’d suspect it would warp too.

Personally, I’d not be using it for that application, Composite is ideal for that environment. No frame required, light weight and easy to sign.

probably not what you want to hear though.

Well I would put money on it that it will bend.

In the past I have added a "U" channel along the top of any sizeable hanging foam pvc signs.
Even an "L" channel would help (pick some up from B & Q).

It wont bend if it’s hanging. Don’t fix it in place though or you will be in trouble. I wouldn’t give a waranty about bending though and saying 3 years doesn’t mean much, it’ll either bend the first time it gets hot or it wont, length of time it’s in place wont really make any odds
