  • Can Etched Vinyl be used as a screen for LCD Projector

Posted by Stephen Murray1 on July 17, 2009 at 1:17 pm

    Hi all,

We are process of quoting for a rebranding of a local nightclub. The owner has informed us that he has seen grey etched vinyl used on a window which would act as a rear projection screen for a LCD Projector. Is this possible ?. If anyone has done it, which material is best. Silver etch, White etch etc. The image would have to be seen on both sides of the window and the clarity does not have to be excellent as the window is quite high up.

In a similar vein does anybody know what effect a LCD Projector has on a window with Contravision. Does it hold the image on the print side and let you see through from the other side?.

Unfortunately we don’t have a LCD projector lying about to try these. It’s still early days though, i should be able to get hold of one next week. I’ll keep you intouch with the results.

    Thanks in advance

    Steve

What he has seen is a specialty vinyl done by 3M I think, and it has been mentioned on the boards a while back……….not cheap though

    Thank you.

Found it. 3m Vikuiti™ Rear Projection Film.
Waiting to hear back regarding prices.
However, i think you can only view the image on one side. The clients need it to be both. The search goes on.

    Cheers

    Holy S*%t

    £5500 for 10m roll at 1.2m wide.

I think that might be out of out clients budget. If anybody has a more low-tech solution, i’m all ears.

    £5500…. 😮

Told ya it was mucho £££££ :lol1: :lol1:

The first time I saw it was in an Ice hockey stadium in Canada. Huge screen, but probably 10-20 lighter than a similar screen that gave the same clarity. also you could view from both sided (all be it one was reversed)

If Im right, Mr Boyle did a shop window with the stuff

Test some standard frost. get a piece of acrylic and apply loads of different samples and see which gives the best result. All depends on what the club is trying to show……….high definition moving pictures or static graphics……….

I’ve seen this before but on a sheet of glass, I presume there was something special on or in the glass but worked very well as it was crystal clear on both sides (except text is obviously backwards so no good for sub-titled movies 🙄 :lol1: )

In fact I also saw one in Harrods a few ears back that you could buy with a digital sound system, I got a picture of it somewhere I think (took one as a tourist as I was on holiday in the UK before I moved here 😉 )

sorry not much help but there might be something out there and this might help the search thoughts.

    cheers

You probably don’t need 10 mtrs so if you bought a roll between you it would only be £2750 each :lol1:

It is possible to buy smaller sections of vikuiti film but it still costs a fortune and is one sided with the reverse appearing black.
The image will work on frosted….I tried it on a section as I was about to scarily apply the vikuiti….Would work in a nightclub if it the surrounding area was pretty dark….There are rules regarding distances, heights etc. 😀 😀

    Cheers

    Stephen

What size of image/window are you looking to create ?

3M Vikuiti comes in 3 standard roll sizes 1220mm x 2.5m, 5.0m and 10.0m. It is also possible to have Vikuiti cut to size and shapes within the 1220mm width. It is generally not recommended to try and overlap or join Vikuiti as this can cause display issues. Vikuiti is a Black rear projection film with glass beads/lenses embedded in the surface that focus the image onto the glass.

As Andrew has stated there are a number of other factors to be aware of with Vikuiti and other rear projection films including lumin output of projector, throw distance and projection angles/projector positioning. These factors are all interlinked and you will acheive limited or poor results if these rules are not followed. If you are trying to acheive a large format screen/image due to the lumin output required you may find the projector cost outweighs the cost of Vikuiti !!

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the Link Ian. Looks promising.

There are 3 windows which we are looking to use the material on and they are all 1520 x 1520mm which means that there would be a join unfortunately.

The Screens will only be used in the evening and because the projector will be mounted reasonably close, I’m still keen to try the effect with the etched glass vinyl. Additionally, this is only a small part of a much bigger job and the Budget is tight as it is ( when is it never!!).

Thanks for all the comments. I’ll be in touch soon with the trial results.

Stephen…You can get the mactac frosted in a wider than 1220mm width which would allow you to make them single sections…Cheers
