  • can anyone tell me why signlab 7&8 is crashing with vist

Posted by John Imrie on August 3, 2008 at 12:07 pm

i am having problems with signlab 7 and 8 crashing very easily with vista i am trying to determine if the problem is with signlab or vista the most annoying part is when it crashes it closes the computer down! and if you are half way through a digi print it’s wasted!

iv’e been trying in vain to contact cadlink over the last couple of days
the main error message i get is mfc application has stopped or not enough memory to create bitmap ok not enough memory but does it have to crash!
if anyone has suggested solutions or is having similar problems i would like to hear from them

mod-edit please post in the correct forum
    this has now been moved

As far as I know – 7 is DEFINITELY not Vista compatible…crashing & the like. Not sure about 8…but would suspect it’s not either.

they say 7.1 build 10 is compatable i then bought 8 but one crashes as much as the other i am also starting to doubt the support from cadlink
been trying to get tech support to speak to me over the last couple of days but not winning
is it signlab you use david?

I’m on Signlab 7.0 r1 so a bit older. Tried it on a ‘better’ PC running Vista…and it worked for a time then just threw a wobbly…not conducive to a working environment.

Never bothered with Cadlink patches or support as there are no updates / fixes for my release last time I checked. Sticking to the status quo…XP works…and I don’t NEED a fantastic PC to cut vinyl…

John, have you been on the cadlink forums? you may get a quicker solution via that route, I have used signlab 8 on my laptop with vista and not had a problem. Have you updated to the latest build?
Its not an excuse for cadlink, but I do know they are short staffed at the moment due to holidays.

    Hi peter
i have been delighted with signlab for years but on thursday morning i phoned after signlab crashed 3 times the third time i was half way through a print the receptionist said i must try my dealer first so i try to phone him can’t get answer back to cadlink girl says phil is is on a call but i will get him to phone you when he is comes off this is lunch time i then try my dealer around 2 he says leave it with him he will chase cadlink up 10 to 5 i phone cadlink again tech support vhas left for the day sorry will get them to phone first thing friday i am still waiting to hear from them!
i have had problems right from the start with vista and maybe vista is the problem but signlab claim that there software is compatable
holidays, short staffed whatever the reason if they can’t return a phone call thats poor service anyway thanks peter i will go and search for some solutions

i upgraded from 7.1 to version 8 and installed it on xp since then i found version 8 very slow in performing and it often crashed – i have since returned to 7.1 with no problems – without chasing cad-link up and trying to sort it I’m carrying on with 7.1 – my computer guy seems to think its my graphic card which cant cope with version 8 so every time I’m trying to open it the whole computer crashes – i right pain

I run Signlab 8 on both XP pro, and Vista 32 bit Ultimate, without any problems, just make sure you have plenty of RAM, and a good graphics card with its own RAM.
I personally don’t use the Signlab RIP, I use the Versaworks RIP on another networked PC that runs only the RIP, which is networked to the printer, so I can carry on working without any fear of losing a big print on the printer.

Sam, can I ask why you don’t run Signlab 8’s rip? if only using the design features of signlab then an earlier version would do the job just as well?

Peter, I personally don’t like it, and the versaworks is able to fine tune each job both material, and image.
I suppose its what you get used to. I do use it for cutting on the plotter, just not the print & cut work

Sam i suppose the stand alone pc for printing is a good idea

phil from cadlink says signlab can not use anymore than 2 gig of ram i have four so thats not the problem it may well be something in my system that it’s clashing with

do a test take a large image and array it a few times and see if it crashes!

i have sent of the error report to phil who in turn has forwarded it to canada, also i had a bit of a moan about cadlink the other day but to be fair they were excellent with me on monday

John, I took a 2.274Mb ai file and arranged it 18 x 3 giving me a total of 54, and it hasn’t fallen over as yet, I allowed the software to complete the 18 rows, before giving it the final 3 column height.

Not sure why you would want to do an array with a large image, why not just duplicate, or copy in the rip?Peter

SL seems to have problems with bitmaps, I can take the same file into X13 or Adobe and not have a problem making lots of copy’s.

It’s something they need to sort out to make the program better.

    Nick.
