Hi, just looking at the manual for the Summa D60, and i dont understand the need for ‘knife pressure adjustment’ and the thumbscrew adjustment on the holder?
Say i were to change to a thicker media say reflective from normal vinyl, would i need to adjust the thumbscrew further down, and increase the knife pressure? Are these not two of the same?? Maybe i have totally misunderstood so any advice appreciated!! 😳
Finally what would be the average or standard knife pressure for normal vinyl?

The thumb screw on the blade holder sets the depth of the blade ( the amount that sticks out the end of the plastic holder), the knife pressure sets the force that the cutter pushes the knife into the vinyl .

depth of blade should be set so that only a tiny amount of blade protrudes from the holder, this ensures that the blade cannot cut through the backing paper or into the plattten strip of the cutter.
Knife pressure should be set to give a cut that weeds easily and leaves only a slight impression of the cut on the shiny side of the backing after the vinyl has been removed. pressure will need to be adjusted for different types of vinyl, flock or to compensate for a blade thats past its best 🙄
Typically my summa is set to 90 for std vinyl with a new blade, 170ish for polyesters a bit higher for flourescentsl.

slowing the cutting speed can also help with difficult materials or fine work

    hope this helps

I follow the same thinking as Paul P as to the use of knife pressure/thumbscrew adjustment on the holder…

When cutting easy-cut garment vinyl and sublidark for garments I set my D60 knife pressure to 75…
