  • Can anyone suggest a RIP to solve transparency problems ?

    Hi all,

Have any of you changed or added another RIP to help solve printing problems ?
If so, can you suggest a RIP to solve my problem …?

I have a customer who sends me complicated files with lots of calques and transparents (png+psd etc).
I have tried flattening the files, saving in eps 10 and many other things however I cannot get the files to print without getting lighter colour frames where the transparancies are.

My customer has told me that the other printing company in another region prints the files with no problems 🙁 So I am guessing that some RIP out there will solve this problem.
I did ask the other printing company what they used and they were not very nice about it to say the least !!

    I use A Roland SP 540V with Versaworks 5.1.1

Other than this trouble I really like Versaworks !!
Thanks to anyone and everyone who can help.
    Andrew

We have the same issues using versaworks, always have, anything with transparencies etc we flatten in photoshop with no problems. If you’ve done it in photoshop and it’s still doing it (and on latest version) then I think there might be another problem causing it?

    Hi Warren,

Thank you very much for your answer
Would that be a different outcome if done with Illustrator ?
I will have a go at that and let you know if that worked for me.
    Can’t wait to see (:) 😀

You need a RIP with an APPE engine like Caldera or Onyx Thrive.

Hi and thanks Jason for your reply.

Would both of those RIP’s solve the problem for sure ?
I also have the possibility of buying a Wasatch RIP, would you know by any chance if this RIP would also solve the problem ?
I will try and find out about the appe engine !
Cheers, will let you all know what I do in the end…

Caldera has a trial you can run to test if it will work.

The trial adds a watermark to your images.

    As above really.

Versaworks does not handle transparency well.

Either flatten in Photoshop and save as a tiff or pay the cash for Caldera / Onyx Thrive.

I don’t think Wasatch has the Adobe engine but it may well handle transparency better that Versaworks. We’ve used Shiraz which I’m sure uses the Jaws engine and that handles transparencies absolutely fine.

If it’s a pdf, and you have acrobat pro, check out transparency preview. You can flatten the file in acrobat pro too.

Spent hours with one file in illustrator, photoshop, to find acrobat pro did it in minutes.

Shiraz works fine I’m told if its kept updated, mine is quite old so we get some problems, I just need to get my hand in my pocket and pay for the update :shake:

I think most modern RIP software will support this now.

I am a reseller for both Shiraz RIP and Onyx Thrive and I can confirm that both are capable of printing files with transparencies. An essential feature these days.
