Can anyone recommend a supplier for 5 or 6mm board?
Posted by Nick Tunstill on January 26, 2013 at 3:58 pmHi I need to make a sign that the customer wants raised off the surface.
I am worried the standard 3mm dibond I use may bend or buckle.
Can anyone recommend a supplier for 5 or 6mm board? Many thanks
Nick

Why don’t you use aluminium from Ashby who can also supply the standoffs. 3mm composite seems to be the norm and I’ve not seen it much thicker than that

Robert Horne do sky bond in a 4mm sheet which I can recommend as a very steady sheet, not a lot of bend in it at all!

HI Nick would be better using 3mm (11swg) aluminium you will get this from ASD metals

While I wouldnt presume to suggest suppliers in New Zealand for this forum,
The norm here is 4mm, we use it for nearly everything. I have never used anything thinner.
I have used 6mm, there was a discussion about this a few months ago where I needed some strength where part of signs protruded above the wall, and into frequent strong winds. This sign has since given us no trouble at all. The 6mm is extremely strong and much easier to rout than 3mm alumimium.I will try to find the link to this discussion as it might be of some use to you, and I will post it here.
Here it is.

Thanks for all the feedback, the sign is 2m x 1m so not huge, just don’t want it bending!

Could you not fix a few stand off bases behind the sign across the middle of its surface? You wouldnt need to face fix through them but would help support the centre of it a bit more.
Just a thought….
