  • can anyone match this vinyl for me please?

Hi, hope someone can help with a question as I’m not that well up on printing. Did some work for a customer who asked if I could provide a small vinyl sample so that he could get his business cards & letterheads printed the same colour.
Got a call from him today to say that the printer had provided proofs but the colour was completely different. When questioned about this the printer said he didn’t have that colour.
I’m not a printer obviously but I thought it was possible to match just about any colour these days. Don’t have pantone charts myself but the vinyl colour was Oracal 551 (403) light violet.

Martin at a guess I would say your client has gone to a so called print shop that is using a toner based copier or even a laser and they can’t colour match.

If the colour is to be matched as a spot colour a proper commercial litho printer will be able to match. BUT if they do a laser proof it will probably be off in colour and they will explain to the client that the proof is for content, layout & rough colour. But the colour will be to the Pantone spot colour chart on the final print NOT the laser proof.

SPOT Colours are also mixed by ratio in the case of Pantone 267.
    12 Parts Pantone Purple
    4 Parts Reflex Blue
    1/2 Part Black

So how the Printer doesn’t have a colour is a load of cr*p unless it’s being done as per the start of my waffle.

Clear as mud, I hope this helps.

    Tim.

Thanks for the replies, thought it was a bit strange a printer saying that he couldn’t match it.
Going to have a word with them on Monday to find out what the score is rather than getting info second hand from the customer.
