can anyone help with this corel X3 question please?

Adobe Illustrator AI/EPS format might be the transfer route… but I am not a SignLab user.
Anyway, PC upgrading is a very good way of getting a new lease of life however buying out of a shop, you never know what u get and System builders normally know which spec works well together and yes it will be a complete change inside as it depends how long you left it since you did your last upgrade.

Thanks Dave, but I can’t really afford to go the adobe route. I also want to stay clear of their upgrade treadmill if I can! My PC was just over 18 months old, and was starting to become obsolete – scary!!

Anyway, I’ve always thought that Corel Draw had the least problematic filters? Be pleased to have any comments from any current corel draw and/or Sign Lab users? I suppose an up to date version of SignLab is the ultimate answer, but I just can’t stretch to that sort of money at the present time? My car is laying on my drive in bits, Xmas credit card bills to sort, and the PC upgrade!! Life is tough in a freezing January in modern Britain!

I didn’t say go out and buy Illustrator or anything like that… the inventors of the main vector fille format was Adobe, this became the industry standard, Corel, SignLab, etc. have licensed the format for use in their programs so it has become one of the best transfer formats between programs.

i read allot on here that folk use corel for signwork, but does it not need a plugin/driver to run it, or do most of the new cutters these days come with something to allow this?

Like the sound of that Rodney, all I’m really after is a fairly quiet life! I don’t care much for the finger crossing, white knuckle ride of ‘will it import or won’t it’! I don’t want to spend the rest of my day trying umpteen different ways of attempting to open a file! I just want to import it, open it, mess around with it (if needs messing around with), then cut the damn thing! Job done, move onto the next one.

So what version of SignLab do you run Rodney?

DL the trial from Corel.com , you have 15 days to activate it , but it’s fully functional.
its a 255mb Download so make sure you have broadband.

Although X3 is downloadable and boxed versions are about in the States the official release date is February 10th, the boxed version having fonts as Open Type and new clipart, Font navigator apparently remains the same.
Just tried here and .. eps imports into SLV5 but all colours are either black or white if using a Pantone colour model.
Cut and paste is causing problems in my V5 but works fine in SL7.1 (convert text to curves to avoid spacing issues)
AI works well, importing into V5 as colour but use a lower version of AI on export.
Some cut and past problems I experience maybe due to OS I’m using XP Pro. Overall Illustrator format at low version (4) is fine

Don’t mind the black & white issue on importing to SL5 as I only cut vinyl. I’m not into digital printing (farm it all out!). What do you mean by ‘OS’ problems (please excuse my ignorance)? Also I have seen boxed versions available on ebay (already), though they claim that they are ‘Educational Editions’? That is fine in my book as Mrs Spooky has just started an OU course and needs to use some graphic software for her course, the fact that I will use it to import and export the odd file is neither here nor there!

well the prevous version of Corel draw was boxed as educational/full/oem and upgrade.. the educational version is identical to the full version. However I suspect she can use the education version on the same computer, I do see any reason why not.
I think the main difference is lack of books but I cant remember.

from memory i think you needed a simple low costing cut program to import the file into like co-cut, or was it sign-go? anyway… i was wondering, is this still the case? is there now alternatives…

I think most cutters come with a plug in for corel Rob, I know summa do one called Win Cut.

Spooky OS = Operating System, V5 does have some issues with XP although many here report no problems. I had problems with undo, multiple launching (was fine in W2000) and apparently cut and paste from Draw X3. SL 7.1 is designed for XP apart from all the other goodies it has.
Academic version of X3 I believe does not include full documentation and I’m not sure about all the fonts and clipart, maynot be upgradeable. Goto http://www.Corel.com the answer may well be there.

Just to add to the debate, as far as I am aware the education version is the same as the commercial version. Alan may be right in that it might not have some of the documentation ie manuals? However, I believe that if you have a child in full time education then there is nothing stopping you buying it for their use? I’ve thought about this, and see it as a good way of getting my daughter into using the computer in a more positive way – better than spending her time online at the Barbie website! 😀

Also meant to say that I have not had any real problem running SL V5 on XP. If anything it has run better on XP than when I used to run it on 98, which was always crashing?

I purchased Corel 12 (educational) in this way, works as expected, all additional software included Coral RAV, Photo paint etc. Just didn’t have the manuals, which is a bit of a nuisance, cos I don’t know of an easy way to look at the clipart, to see what is available!
(Purchased off Ebay, BTW)

XP has better DLL library calls and new structure, running new software on old operating systems should be avoided as programmers work on new operating systems.
