  • can anyone help with problem & rockhopper ink please?

Posted by Nick Findlater on March 21, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Hi I wondered if anyone could help.

I recently added a second hand rockhopper 38 to my collection but have not really had a chance to use it. It came with some used cartridges and after setting it up the Cyan was empty.

I ordered a set of Inktec 440ml Eco Solvent Ultra cartridges and a set of cleaning cartridges yesterday. They arrived today but I am having trouble loading them.

I put the cleaning cartridges in and according to the manual they should be auto detected and start the cleaning process. They didn’t, but instead come up with the error "differ ink kind"

I’ve had a look through the menu but there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do to get them recognised.

I decided to put the old ones back in, but not they are coming up with the same thing!

I’ve had the old cartridges out before to check their capacity and they have been loaded back in without any problems.

Can anyone shed and light on my problem?

    Regards
    Nick

    hi there

    thanks for your reply.

They don’t have the silver stickers on them. The cartridges are just plain white.

I bought the printer second hand and it came with a set of inks in it already. It was a bit of a mix and match. There was an inktec compatible, a genuine mutoh and 2 refillable cartridges.

The printer sat in my unit unused for about a month so I decided to use the cleaning cartridges to flush it out before replacing the cartridges with a set of compatible inktec carts I bought.

After trying the cleaning carts, I decided to refit the ink that was working previously. But now I am getting the same error.

The printer was working fine before I fitted the cleaning carts. I’d done some nozzle test prints and they were not perfect hence why I was going to use the cleaning carts.

    cheers

Take the foil labels of the empty carts and put them on your new carts. I bought some carts from spandex ages ago and had to swap their chip with the foil label from an old cart and it worked a treat.

Sorry to jump in to your thread Nick but i’m in a similar situation. I too bought a 2nd hand rockhopper and bought a full set of Eco-Solvent inks and cleaning cartridges, (WinCom). I also get the "Differ Ink Kind" message and can’t get any further. The new cartirdges don’t appear to have any foil labels that i can see so i’m thinking i have the same problem. Trouble is my rockhopper didn’t have any cartridges installed when i bought it so i don’t have any foil labels to transfer. Can anyone offer any advice?

All rockhopper 38 cartridges should have a silver label on about the size of a beer mat. There should be a black square about half the size of a stamp. The way to get round it is you have to take off the stickers from old cartridges and put it on the new ones.
You do have to be careful as when peeled off they are fragile and you have to stick the sticker in the correct place.
I have done many conversions and this is the way round it.
Just as a matter of interest do your new cartridges have a smart chip on or nothing.

I think they are just dumb, no smart chip that i can see.

Wincom (the cartridge manufacturer) have now confirmed i need the silver labels off original Mutoh cartirdges. They suggested i buy a set of Mutoh’s so i can re-use the labels!!

I suppose i will also need silver labels on the cleaning cartridges? What are the chances i can re-use the silver labels on cleaning cartridges and then re-use again on the actual inks? Or, are they too delicate for this and i will need two sets?

You can’t use the cleaning silver foil stickers from the cleaning cartridges on ink cartridges. I think the black sqaure is in a different place.

Yes they are very fragile when you take them off. Like handling cling film and you run the risk of rubbing off the black square.

The hard bit is locating the silver sticker on the ink cartridge in the correct place. When you do manage to get it in the right place Cover the sticker with thin clear vinyl to stop the sticker coming away. This should sort you issue.

OK Steve, thanks for that info. Looks like i’m in need of a set of empty cleaning carts and a set of empty ink carts, can anyone help me out? As mentioned before i’m willing to compensate anyone who can help me out and i’ll obviously pay the P&P costs.

    regards

Are you trying to load inktek ink into the rockhopper 38. If you want to do this properely you need to flush out the system first using 4 cleaning cartridges or 4 bulk ink cartridges and filling them with cleaning solution and doing about half a dozen power cleans.

Then you can put the 3rd party cartridges in and do a couple of power cleans and the ink should come through ok.

Do you know the condition of the heads, capping station and dampers.

I’m trying to use Wincom Ink, not Inktec. Still a non-original supplier so should be the same process i would have thought. My printer is actually a rockhopper 62, i have bought a set of six cleaning carts and a set of six inks carts but run into the problem of no silver labels. I’m currently of the opinion i need sliver labels for my cleaning carts and another set for the actual ink carts.

I don’t know the condition of components except the heads were replaced 1 year ago and its not done much work since. I’m just trying to get it working, but being a newbie i’m running into a few issues!

    hello all
why don’t you just stick to mutoh inks, they might cost a little more but,

1 you don’t have all this aggro.
2 all your profile will be out
3 you don’t know how light fast these third party inks are
4 are they going to stink your place out, the mutoh inks have hardly any smell
5 if they are like a lot of the other inks out there any money you will save on ink, you will lose on have to replace, heads capping stations and dampers,
6 add up all your time sorting the above and you will properly find its cost you more over all

this is just from what i have seen, and if anyone says i am saying this to get ink sales, we will only sell ink to people who have purchased machines of us

    hello all
Chris this is what i was trying to say, they should sell the inks with the labels or chip depending on machine and if they are in it for the long term offer a profiling service,
or at least put the customer in contact with some one who can offer these service and let them have a costing of what this bundle is going to cost, they can look at the bigger picture and way up if its with all the aggro

Well, with hindsight i can appreciate using Mutoh Ink would have been easier. As a newbie i just wanted to get up and running with minimum cost, i don’t even know if the printer is fully function yet.

I contacted inktec about my cartridges missing the silver stickers and they sent 8 stickers through.

I couldn’t use their cleaning cartridges correctly though as according to the manual for the rockhopper it is supposed to recognise the cartridges as cleaning cartridges when you insert them. I assume they have special stickers on them. My ones have standard ink stickers on them

    cheers

Thats interesting Nick……Don’t think Wincom will do the same for me, when i asked them about this problem i was told they expect people to transfer the stickers off old carts!
