  • can anyone help with my own car layout please?

hi, i’ve been toying with an idea for my own cars for a few months now, i think i’m now happy with the overall ‘logo’, but wondered if there’s owt that’s drastically wrong with either design, in your opinions,

i’ve avoided the usual big list of services for now,
    as

A, i think it’ll clutter it up, and i like it simple.

    and
B, i couldnt find anywhere for it without cluttering it up.

i like the idea of the fade (actually a distorted ‘converted to curves’ section of text), though i would like to fnind a way to make it look more like the sun’s rays (cdr12).

not much else to add really.

before ya’ll ask, doobie is the lucida mpv (dby on the No plate, nowt to do with smokin doobies !) i was thinking of getting a van, but the mrs said i had to think of kids too, not just signs and fishing gear !

the mlc is the MX5 (mrs calls it my mid life crisis car ! 😮 )

for the time being i’m keeping both, the lucida will take 8×4 sheets, and the mx carries smaller signs with the roof down, it’s a horrible job, but someone has to do it !

Both very eyecatching. Just one question: how are you going to do this? I can’t see how it can be done without a complete wrap.

The 5 looks good, kinda Spidermanny. I wonder if my girlyfriend will let me do that to hers?

Good work Hugh – very eye catching and a good advert for what you do. Well done. 😀

Hi Andy, if ya like it, i’ll send you the file, matching Drag-On cars !!! or did ya not want the drag-On bit 😕

as for doing it, printed on clear ? it’s only a partial wrap isn’t it ? and neither vehicle is overly taxing on my abilities (i think !).

    Phil, thanks 😀

You’ll need to print this on white vinyl for the colours to look right – Clear vinyl would only work if the vehicles themselves were white.

There’s talk these days about printers that use white inks – don’t know if that is the answer or not ?

so what would eb the best way to do it, seriously?!

on the mx one, it would mean all the red in between the lattice thing (which took days to get right!) would be printed, yes ? how would we get a decent match ? unless where poss, it was contour cut.

every camera, screen etc, views or displays colour differently, so it must be difficult to get a nice blend on the edges.

as i don’t print, and get it done a fair way away, i’d be hard pressed to guarantee a good match / fade into the vehicle colours ?

arrrrrrrrrrggh., this was easy the other day !

    Hi Hugh,
very nice looking work on the cars.
Did you say that they were printed or did I misunderstand you?
You can send me the files if you would as I like to see what a good end result looks like in my software as a comparison.

    regards

    Hi Andrew,

i’ve converted the file to ai, not to scale now though (stuck em on A4).

the swirly geometric thingy at the back too ages to draw / get right ! it’ll want a bit of finishing for the MX, but is pretty much as is now,

    hopefully the conversion looks ok.

Hi Hugh, as Phill says, unfortunately it wont work very well on clear.
the colours will look washed out even with a multiple pass of the print, Inkjets that use white are not the answer either, as the white is not opaque, and is used as a highlight when printing rather than a block-out.

A thermal printer could do it, but not many have a large format one, like the summa I think.

I have just passed on a similar job for a local car dealer, they insisted on a fade to the van colour, (silver). they got them done elswhere, and they look awful!

I even did some sample prints for them to demo the result.

Any one else have a suggestion?

    Design looks good BTW

    Hi hugh,
thanks for that. I have signlab 5.
What was the original file format please as I got a missing font/replacement font error on opening in ai.

The geometric thingy reminds me of an orange or globe converted to wire frame then pulled out. really nice, how did you do it mate, did you draw on paper and scan in or have you mastered the art of the digital pen?

    regards

HI Andrew, i’ve reposted the file with text converted to curves.

the geometric design was aqll started from this image, i had to mirror it, flip it, match it in the right place, and draw it, much of it had to be imagined as it simply wasn’t there ! copy and paste the pic and try it, you’ll see what i mean, took me ages !

    HI Andrew, i use coreldraw 12. but 18 months ago i couldn’t draw a circle !

i try and draw everything myself, unless i’m real busy and need a certain logo that i think might be given through uksg, it’s amazing what i’ve learned just by trying to make something, and playing with different tools and settings, things that i often use everyday now, between that and various tips picked up along the way, i like to kid myself that i’ve become rather competent in it’s uses, although in reality, i’ve barely scratched the surface of what corel can do !
