  • can anyone help with installing software please?

    Hello,

I’m having some problems with software we bought secondhand off a signmaker. These are all genuine etc, we just bought them as part of a lot, as sadly the business has closed. The man we’ve bought them off didn’t really know much about the software, and it was pennies really in amongst a few other bits we bought so we’re just trying to figure it out.

First question would be: We have a disc- CorelDraw Essential Edition 3 and although I’ve loaded it onto the computer (running XP) the tutorials, read me etc work, but with Corel itself the following happens "Fail to load appboxid.xml file." Then "Runtime error! Abnormal program termination". Does anybody have any idea why this is, and is this a ‘proper’/appropriate/useful version of CoreL

Secondly, there’s a disc for FlexiFAMILY version 5.8 with some manuals. Is this actually Sign-Pro as it says on the manuals? Sadly, this is for a Mac- which we don’t have- but if it’s the actual useful software then we may just have to buy one.

There is also the following Software- Impact Digital Libraries, MR Car n Truck vehicle outline collection, MR 3D design, and another couple of sign type CD’s come up with error messages when trying to open files about not recognising file format ‘ai’. Is this because we have no Vector software installed on the computer (ai meaning adobe illustrator maybe?!)- e.g if could install Corel they would work? Or, alternatively, am I just being extremely thick, which is not at all uncommon 😉 Oh god…

All help appreciated on this one ladies and gents!
    Ta very much,

    Emma

You are correct – ai is an adobe illustrator file and Corel Draw is one program that could open it.

As for Corel failing to start – Do a google search for appboxid.xml – you will find this question asked and answered on Corel Draw forums 😀

Hi Phil, ok I’m looking now, I had tried that first (not for that error code though) but what I’m finding now is all mxml and x4, dll files and dependency walker… don’t have a clue what they’re all on about. I must be so out of touch. I’m not even computer illiterate, well I thought not lol

As an aside, our copy of your book arrived Friday- fantastic, very, very helpful so thanks and well done too!

I didn’t have a clue either – I was hoping you would understand the answers given 😕

Thanks for buying the book – I hope you find it usefull 😀

Ha ha ha ha well that’s made me feel a bit better… I can tell you it’s something to do with service packs (thats the sp bit in amongst all the code speak you’ll have spotted too!) I’ve tried downloading something, which I will now transport over to computer concerned- which doesn’t have internet access- and see if I have any joy.

I wonder if it’s us or technology 😀 And yes, the book has already been smashing thanks Phil, helped clear a few points I was struggling with on business plan and linked to some great things.

    I found this http://www.justanswer.com/questions/1vt … aw-x4-fail
I know it doesn’t relate to Corel Essentials but problem maybe the same.

Corel Essentials from what I remember was a cut down version of Draw and may or may not have all import or export filters. AI would be best imported into Draw and not opened, minor difference but using the correct import filter can be more reliable. I would be inclined to get a more up todate version of Draw, X3 or X4 and not student version of X3 this will ensure you have VBA and can make use of macros as some cutting utilities rely on that ability.

Thanks Alan. I think it must be a problem with my desktop computer, managed to get Corel loaded on this laptop- but this is only on loan. But, if it’s only a ‘limited’ version I guess it wont be much use anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the Flexifamily disc is? Still can’t find anyone with a Mac to try it out on lol 😉
