  • can anyone help with cutting text and adding an outline?

Posted by Adele Brennan on March 1, 2009 at 2:57 pm

Have just got myself new pc and had to set all my software up again.

Everything going well until I try to cut txt with a 5mm outline. I want blue txt with black 5mm outline.

I have a roland camm 1 cutter and using the cut studio software to cut. There doesnt seem to be option to add outline to txt with software and when I do it in corel draw x3 and paste it into cut studio I end up with lines everywhere.

Have also tried duplicating txt and increasing size but the spacing isnt right.

Can anyone help? It’s for a job I need to do tomorrow.

    Thanks
    Adele

I can’t comment on Cut Studio Adele but in Corel create your contour (inside, outside or centre) to your required dimension – Window>Dockers>Contour (or Effects>Contour). Then Arrange>Break Contour Apart and cut from there.

Thanks for that. I can get that to work in corel it’s just my cut studio plugin for corel doesnt work 🙁

Is there a way to do this even in Illustrator?

    In Illustrator…….

Type in your text and outline it.
    Copy it.
On the copy, select paths, offset.
In the resulting dialogue box, specify 5mm offset.
Get rid of any superfluous lines by whichever method you are most familiar.
Colour the letters blue, and the copy black.

Cut the black and apply to the substrate.
Cut the blue, and apply on top of the black.

    Job done.

After breaking apart in Corel could you not save as eps and import into Cut Studio?

You can outline text in cutstudio by converting the text to poly-lines and then outline using the offset button, alternatively you can export and save from coreldraw as an eps which should import and open ok in cutstudio.

Regarding cut line and Corel. This is just a guess but users may experience problems with outputting eps and ai files if the level is set too high in Corel/importing programmes can’t process a high level.
EPS in X3 try dropping postscript level to 1 and ensure ‘export text is curves’
AI – export as low level – ie 3 or 4 – text to curves and all other boxes unchecked ie ‘simulate complex fills’ etc. this will avoid construction lines in you text.
This may well make no difference but might be worth a try.
