can anyone help VEF Files in Signlab wont import correctly?
Posted by Steve Thornton on February 4, 2007 at 5:22 pmHi guys a wee problem you might be able to help with.
A friend has sent me some files of work he has done so that I can see signlab 7.01 at its best. However when I try to open them it says I do not have the correct fonts( GOTLAND.VEF) I have not heard of the file ext VEF. Is there any sites out there where I can aquire them or is it a case of converting TTF to VEF?
Cheers Steve

your friend needs to convert fonts to curves then save it then it will open ok for you

Steve, What program are you opening the files with?

I’m using Signlab 7.01, I think he might have used an earlier version of signlab. 4.95? maybe.

I’m a bit confused now, if he wants to show you how good Signlab 7.01 is why did he send you files from an earlier version?
Just get him to convert them to curves as Nick has suggested and you won’t have any problem viewing them at all.

if you are running sign lab of any version the vef fonts are all the same, but if you have not installed them they cannot open, you need to copy them from your installation fonts and clip art disc, I assume its a demo download you are using so you will only have a limited number of fonts available. If you have used the full version of sign lab you would have heard of vef…

Just making a note that Gotland.VEF is an engraving (single line) font. It’s no use for vinyl or print as it has zero line width.

Peter.. Yes I am using a demo version, with a view to purchase.
David…Yes its an engraving machine I wish to use it on, a CYPHER systems 4824.
Norman….is it possible to add more fonts to the demo version, I will try when I’m back into work Tuesday.Cheers all

steve,
VEF are signlab fonts, a lot are redrawn ttfs so that when enlarged they don’t have jaggy edges.
I am not sure if you can add fonts other fonts in the demo, but either way you will not be able to save, use or export your work.I cant comment on signlab as an engraving tool, only used it for print and cut

As far as I understand, the demo version (latest version 7.1)
http://www.cadlink.com/products/signLab … l_demo.php
has all of the features of the full version except the ability to:copy, cut, save, export, drag-n-drop, print, plot etc. Basically any way of getting the generated files out of Signlab… You should be able to install plug-ins, fonts etc. as the demo is essentially the same as using it without the dongle plugged in….
I don’t know if any of the engraving & profiling features / menus are in the demo (it’s pretty basic)…or if you’d be better of with ‘EngraveLab’ if all it’ll be doing is engraving.

I do have a copy of Engravelab pro 5.06 with dongle etc. Like I said I was looking for an all in 1 solution and was hoping Signlab would cover it. I do not use Engravelab at the moment, I am using Gravostyle 98 on my IS400 Volume Gravograph. Thanks for the reminder, all I need now is to find the manuals and try it.

I know Signlab can be a ‘Jack of all trades’ with engraving, vinyl & print in one package.
Try calling one of the UK distributers & seeing how much the ‘engraving / routing / profiling’ module is on top of say the ‘vinyl pro’ version and if your machine is supported (most are).

You Know what, you guys are so good to us newbies. I only hope that one day someone will ask a question that I can answer with some authority and with the same clarity.
Thanks Steve
